The Schenectady County Historical Society is a private, not-for-profit organization with the mission to share stories, inspire dialogue, and encourage understanding of the history, people, and cultures of Schenectady County. SCHS brings to life the region's dynamic history through interactive exhibits, education programs, and community events for all audiences at the Mabee Farm Historic Site, the Grems-Doolittle Library, and the Schenectady History Museum, and Brouwer House Creative. The Grems-Doolittle Library is home to a substantial collection of books and periodicals, photographs, maps, newspaper clippings, surname, archival collections, and maps pertaining to Schenectady County history. Our library and archival collections are strong in the early colonial history of the area, mainly in the 17th and 18th centuries, and genealogical resources.
The Ann Ross Genealogy Research Collection is composed of materials related to genealogical research about area families conducted by Ann Ross, a volunteer for the Capital District Genealogy Society and head of the New York State Genealogy Volunteers.
Collection includes bulletins, reports, maps and informational booklets and brochures pertaining to the Great Flats Aquifer in Schenectady County, NY. Also includes documents relating to the environmental impact of gravel mining, descriptive booklets for various wetlands of New York State, and documents and lists by Vincent Schaefer concerning the Great Flats area.

The Charles and Douglas Snell Collection comprises letters written to family and friends during the last two years of World War II, 1943-1945. The letters are separated into two distinct boxed series by individual author: Box “A” - Douglas: August 1, 1943 to August 19, 1945, and Box “B” - Charles - April 15, 1943 to August 27, 1945 and. Each boxed set contains a folder of miscellaneous items that are related to the letters.

This collection contains the personal papers, photographs, writings, and scrapbooks of Mr. Harris Ottaway (1904-1999) as well as his decades of correspondence (1978-1999) with countless pen pals, most of whom were residents at the Kingsway Arms Nursing Home and retirement centers. Mr. Ottaway’s personal organizational system of the correspondence materials is left intact and generally follows a pure chronological order with an index.

This collection contains materials from the Schenectady High School system. The bulk of collection dates from 1931 to 1983, however, some materials date from as early as 1927 and as late as 1992. Materials are almost entirely from Linton High School (1957-1992) and Mont Pleasant High School (1931-1992), though a few materials relate to the whole district and a few to Nott Terrace High School (1903-1958). This collection contains newspaper clippings relating to staff and students of both schools, some theater performance materials and posters, Linton HS library and school construction materials, and some general Schenectady School district materials, school newspapers and literary newspapers, photographs, maps, and blueprints.

The collection includes a significant amount of material related to early settlement of Schenectady, as well as the land and trusteeship disputes in the city.
