RPI’s Institute Archives documents the history of the Institute from its founding as the Rensselaer School in 1824 through to the present day, including permanent records of academic and administrative offices, documents pertaining to student clubs and organizations, and Institute publications. Special Collections are comprised of manuscript collections, rare books, pamphlets, and artifacts related to the history of science and technology. Among the department's holdings are the Roebling Collection documenting the design and construction of the Brooklyn Bridge, George M. Low's NASA papers, a substantial photograph collection, photo albums and scrapbooks highlighting student life, and biographical materials on RPI students, faculty, staff, and alumni.

Alchemical manuscript by Chaudes, 1788

Handwritten notebook on philosophy and alchemy signed by the writer, only known as Chaudes. The entire notebook is written in French, except for some drawings at the end, which are described in Latin. The drawings appear to depict how water and oil droplets respond to different materials, like dirt, coal, sulfur, and ash.

The most noteworthy diary entries describe Powell's reaction to President Lincoln's assassination, how the city of Troy mourned the passing of the President, as well as mentioning his visit to Albany to view President Lincoln's casket.

This collection contains microfilm copies of 21 diaries kept by Asa Fitch, scientist and entomologist. The diaries reflect in considerable detail Fitch's life and thoughts from early adolescence through his education at the Rensselaer School (Class of 1827) and the Vermont Academy of Medicine in Castleton, his career as a scientist and state entomologist in New York, and his retirement. Also included are papers and genealogical materials relating to other members of the Fitch family.

This notebook also includes financial accounts of the Potsdam Watertown Railroad in 1853, and notes regarding RPI's 1853, 1854, and 1855 commencements.

Charles T. A. Sibbald civil engineering notes, undated

This collection contains two notebooks from Charles Sibbald, Rensselaer Class of 1912. The first notebook, titled, "Notes on Checking," includes directions on needle checks, grades of sewers and sanitation, dimensions of items such as laundry washers, and notes on contract drawings. The second notebook contains a note from Sibbald to Rensselaer, stating that this notebook is the byproduct of years of construction work with the New York State Public Works Department. The notebook includes information such as rainfall and run-off data, manhole cover frame dimensions, water consumption, and dimensions of flow drains.

Sherrerd, who was a member of the RPI Class of 1903, including two of Sherrerd's laboratory notebooks, four newspaper accounts of his death by drowning, and two letters from Rensselaer's President, Palmer C. Ricketts. One letter, written to Reverend Roger Israel, discusses Sherrerd as a student and the specifics of the casket, and the other is a copy of a letter that Ricketts wrote to Sherrerd's father, expressing his sympathy over Sherrerd's passing.

Ten short Cine-Kodak Super-X and Super-XX 16mm films created by C. Monroe Van Ness during the Spring 1951 semester at RPI. A wide variety of campus activities and events were filmed in preparation for a WRGB television program that aired on May 10 of that year, including students studying, parts of lacrosse games against Cornell and Virginia, the Annual Festival of Music, GM Week, ROTC drills, Soiree, in addition to other local events.

Cunningham, U.S.N. (RPI Class of 1885).

The Dora P. Crouch Papers, 1955-1989 (bulk 1965-1989), chronicle her academic and professional activities at several California colleges and universities, and at RPI in Troy NY. They are divided into four series: I. Correspondence 1982-1989 (.4 cu.ft.); II. Curriculum/Course Material 1969-1989 (2 cu.ft.); III. Publications and Papers 1955-1988 (.8 cu.ft.); and IV. Subject Files, in nine subseries, 1959-1989 (2.9 cu.ft.). Series I, Correspondence, arranged chronologically, contains exchanges with colleagues, as well as material related to her membership in RPI committees (Faculty Council, Curriculum, Honors, Graduate Program), and to her publication efforts. Series II, Curriculum/Course Material, is arranged chronologically, then alphabetically by subject per semester. It includes handwritten notes, mimeograph and xerographic handouts, overhead transparencies, examples of student work, and a set of cassettes, chronicling twenty years of Professor Crouch's teaching and efforts at curriculum development. Series III, Publications and Papers, begins with class notes taken by Ms. Crouch while a student at Michigan and UCLA. Next there are drafts and reprints of some of her articles, excerpts from her two books, a project description for Volume One of the Art and Architecture Thesaurus, and drafts and copies of book reviews. This landscape design, titled "On the Hill," details the topography and grounds of the home of R.C. and G.R. Reynolds in Wynantskill, New York. The landscaping was designed by Garnet D. Baltimore, RPI Class of 1881, who was Rensselaer's first Black graduate.

The majority of the photographs depict large pieces of machinery and parts. Some photos show interior and exterior shots of the company building in Schenectady. A few of the interior photographs show flooding inside the GE plant.
