Background

Scope and Content:

The Charles Cyril Martin papers (MC 15) document several facets of Martin's life. Personal letters between Martin and his wife show day to day family activities. Of special interest to Roebling scholars are two letters from Washington Roebling to Mr. Martin in 1882 indicating their relationship. Another letter of note written in 1854 by Mr. Martin describes his first impression of R.P.I. The legal papers consist of a will and estate apppraisals. The newspaper clippings are mainly obituaries. There are several clippings about a fire on the Williamsburg Bridge in 1902 when Mr. Martin's son, Kingsley Martin was Assistant Bridge Engineer there. The publications include several proposals for improvements for the Brooklyn Bridge. Photographs included in the collection show Mr. Martin's residence on Windsor Terrace, Brooklyn, NY. The papers also include genealogical information on Mr. Martin and his wife who were both descendants from the Mayflower passengers and includes information on their Martin, Howland, and Bradford ancestors.
