On a 1949 tuition scholarship she attended Eastern Montana College 1950-51 and the University of Michigan 1951-55. She continued her studies at UCLA in 1964, earning her BA in 1965, her MA in 1967, and her Ph.D., with distinction, in 1969. She held a variety of assistant professor positions in Art and Architecture at California institutions before accepting an associate professorship in architecture at RPI in 1975. She was granted tenure there in 1978, and became full professor of architectural history there in 1985. She has done scholarly work on urban history, particularly early classical and Spanish Colonial urban design. RPI sponsored her 1980-1, 1985 and 1988 sabbaticals. She retired in 1989.
