The Rockefeller Archive Center is a repository of historical materials and a research center dedicated to the study of philanthropy and the many domains touched by American foundations, individual donors, and the civil society organizations they support. It was established in 1974 initially to gather, preserve, and make accessible the records of the Rockefeller family and their far-reaching philanthropic endeavors, such as the Rockefeller Foundation, and Rockefeller Brothers Fund. The Archive Center today holds the archives of major foundations, cultural organizations, research institutions, and many individuals associated with these organizations.

RG 4, LSR's Snapshot Files, contains LSR's personal photos, relating especially to his family, houses, friends and activities, travel, and resort developments. The Snapshot Files label reflects the smaller format of the prints (up to 5" x 7") and their grouping into discrete sets of prints and negatives, which are housed together in individual (and sometimes in their original) photo envelopes.

Collection is comprised of files pertaining to the preparation, production, and promotion of the South Africa UPDATE Series. The Ford Foundation initiated the UPDATE Series project in order to update the South Africa: Time Running Out report (SATRO) that was published in 1981 by the Study Commission on U.S. Policy Towards Southern Africa. The series consists of five monographs. Each book focuses on a particular theme regarding political developments in South Africa during the 1980s. Subjects covered in the series include international relations between South Africa and the United States, politics in the region of Southern Africa, political activism of black South Africans; reforms made to the Apartheid system, and the state of civil rights in South Africa.

William H. Whyte papers, 1944-1993

The papers of urbanist, journalist, author and people-watcher William H. Whyte, which date from the mid-1940s to the early 1990s, relate primarily to his projects and research. The collection contains a vast amount of material on Whyte's work with easements as well as his various film projects. Materials on studies of pedestrian behavior and city dynamics conducted as part of the "Street Life Project", including Whyte's research on city social life as well as human and vehicular movement patterns, are also a prominent part of the collection.
