The Local History & Genealogy Division of the Rochester Public Library holds more than 500 cubic feet of personal papers, records, and manuscripts related to the history of Rochester, Monroe County, and the Genesee Valley region of New York State. These important primary sources are invaluable to the preservation of the region's collective memory and provide first-hand glimpses into the lives of local luminaries and average citizens alike. Collection areas include the beginning and growth of public-supported educational media in Rochester; social reform in Rochester and Monroe County; and Rochester businesses, clubs, and organizations. Comprised of paper-based documents, glass plate negatives, lantern slides, and original artwork, highlights of these collections include a 1792 deed signed by Ebenezer “Indian” Allen; unpublished histories and biographies; and personal papers of Susan B. Anthony, former Rochester mayor Hiram Edgerton, and Nathaniel Rochester and the Rochester family, among many others.Rundel Memorial Building

Yates, Anah Fredericka Babcock

Anah Babcock Yates was a historian and genealogist, one of the first people to research the history of Rochester, New York through archival sources. Her papers include genealogical research, correspondence, clippings, photographs, legal documents, a hair album, information on early (white) Rochesterians, documents on Ebenezer Allen, early probate records, and genealogy information. The papers date from 1839 into the 1930s.

Yacknin, Ellen
This collection consists of materials collected by Ellen M. Yacknin in her position as legal counsel to the Gay Alliance of the Genesee Valley during the case of Gay Alliance of Genesee Valley v. City Assessor, City of Rochester. The materials date between 1991 and 1994. They include Yacknin's personal correspondence on the case, legal briefs and other court documents, and newspaper clippings.

WXXI (Television station: Rochester, N.Y.)
The records of the Rochester Area Educational Television Association (RAETA), which date between the years 1951 and 1979, describe the organization's efforts to establish an educational television station in Rochester, New York. The collection includes committee, trustee, and membership records, program guides, FCC court dockets, board minutes, and correspondence. The fight to obtain Channel 13 is well-documented, as is RAETA's subsequent decision to withdraw their petition as it became clear that the FCC's decisions favored commercial, rather than educational, programming.

Woodward, , C. W. (Charles Warren)

This unique collection of almost 325 prints in stereoscopic views, centers mainly on photographs taken in the Rochester, New York area between 1865 and 1900. Supplementing this collection are stereographs from other regions of New York State and other states. Very few items are unidentified. The majority of the items were taken by local photographers, but a few are from other New York State and non-local creators. Some items are heavily annotated on the back, but most are not.

Women's Educational and Industrial Union Records (Rochester, N.Y.)
The Rochester Women's Educational and Industrial Union Records document an organization established in 1893 to improve educational, social, and economic conditions for women and children. The collection includes business and financial records, including meeting minutes, financial statements, and correspondence; philanthropic papers documenting numerous charitable projects; commemorative and promotional materials, including newsletters, flyers, and anniversary booklets; visual materials recording WEIU events; and commemorative and promotional artifacts.

This collection consists of records of Woman's Christian Temperance Union in the village of Fairport, New York and of the Monroe County, New York annual meetings and other county-wide events. The records consist of ledger books maintained by recording and corresponding secretaries, and of executive committee meeting minutes. The records date between 1877 and 1941.

Whittlesey, Frederick

Four volumes of records created by Frederick Whittlesey (June 12, 1799 – September 19, 1851), an early Rochester lawyer, Congressional representative, and leader of Anti-Masonic movement. The records in this collection date between 1826 and 1831. They include a day book, cash books, and a scrapbook on the Morgan disappearance.

Watson, William G.

Photocopy of a letter from William G. Watson, of the Rochester Clearing House Association, to the Rochester Historical Society. Dated December 27, 1936, the letter explains details of the Rundel estate that had been in controversy and includes his reminiscences of Mr. Rundel in his later years.

This collection consists of photographs taken by a member or members of the Villnow family of Rochester, New York. The photographs consist of 114 glass plate negatives, containing images of family, friends and Rochester, New York-area scences. The images are dated from 1910 and 1911.

Van Ness, Judith

This collection consists of photographs and documents from the personal papers of Judith Van Ness, a lifelong Rochester resident and former librarian at the Rochester Public Library. The photographs document Rochester buidlings and scenes from the 1970s to the 1990s. The documents include a copy of her essay on draft card burning, undated but likely written in 1966, which provides a first-person account on the topic right from the time during which it became a signifcant form of anti-Vietnam War protest.

Van Ness, Judith

This collection consists of recipes collected by Rochester resident Judith Van Ness. The receipes reflect her personal interest in low-sugar and vegetarian cooking at a time when these approaches to eating were first entering the American diet. The collection includes both recipes clipped from various sources and those written out longhand. A guide to the handwriting of various recipe writers is included with the collection.

United States. Works Progress Administration (N.Y.)

The Works Progress Administration was a federal project of the 1930s, part of the "alphabet soup" of Great Depression public relief projects. It primarily supported public works projects. The materials in this collection cover various topics relating to W.P.A. projects for Monroe County, New York. They include correspondence, geodetic info, resolutions, road costs, the Rush Town Hall, and the Rush Rifle Range. The materials date from 1935 to 1942.

The Works Progress Administration was a federal relief project of the Great Depression era. The Writer' Project provided work for people involved in creative or administrative work by doing writing and or research heavy tasks. The Place Names project involved cataloging and documenting the origins of place names. Materials in this collection include half-sheets of paper with geographical information. They record geographical, political, historical, and geological facts for the counties of Allegheny, Chemung, Livingston, Monroe, Ontario, Schuyler, Seneca, Steuben, Wayne, and Yates, and their towns, cities, and villages. The materials date from the late 1930s.

This collection consists of the records of the Rochester, N.Y., operations of the United Services Organizations during the Second World War. Materials in this collection include activities programs, newsletters, publications, correspondence, blueprints, negatives, and photographs. The materials date between 1943 and 1946.

Tuberculosis and Health Association of Rochester and Monroe County
The records of the Health Association of Rochester and Monroe County, which date from the year of its founding in 1917 as the Rochester Tuberculosis Committee, describe the organization's efforts to prevent, treat, and cure tuberculosis in the Rochester and Monroe County areas. The collection includes founding documents, annual reports, histories, meeting minutes, photographs, newsletters, reports, glass slides, and ephemera. The organization would evolve to encompass practically all aspects of public health; this collection well documents its efforts to aid in the recovery of alcoholics and the mentally ill, and to educate the public about health matters in general.

The Travelers' Club of Rochester was a women's study club dedicated to discussing travel and history. The materials in the collection include programs, meeting minutes, newspaper clippings. Bound books of minutes, 1916-1965. Overall collection dates are from 1893 to 1985.

Talman, John Thurston

This collection consists of 6 day books belonging to John T. Talman, an early Rochester banker and industrialist. Best remembered today for the eponymous Talman Building, he was an important civic leader as well as a successful businessman. The day books date from 1839 to 1850, and record daily financial transactions.

Sweet, Leona

15 photographs from Frank Hurlburt and family. Hurlburt was a captain in the New York Central Railroad police ca. 1920s-1930s; most photographs depict the railroad in some manner. Three of the photographs depict an "Old Timers' Dinner" of Rochester Folding Box Company in 1954; Ronald Sweet's mother and stepfather were employed by this company.

Swartz, Joel

This collection consists of documents, photographs and other records related to Ellen Swartz's involvement in two notable Rochester public art projects. Swartz, a furniture maker, collaborated with sculptor Calvin Hubbard on a frieze of the Post family for the Hochstein School and a bust of Austin Steward for the former Rochester Riverside Hotel, both during the 1980s. Swartz produced the frame for the frieze and a base for the bust. Materials in the collection date between 1985 and 2002.

This collection consists of the papers of Dr. John M. Swan of Rochester, New York, a leader of the Medical Officers' Reserve and founder of Base Hospital 19 during the First World War. This collection consists of a scrapbook created by Thomas P. Stowell, Rochester, New York based fire insurance adjuster and investigator for Aetna. The scrapbook dates between 1846 to 1878. Stone, Georgia C.
The Livingston Park Seminary, originally called the Curtis Seminary, operated from 1860 to 1934; the name Livingston Park Seminary was adopted follwing the death of Mrs. Cathro Curtis in 1892. The materials in this collection include operating records of the Seminary between 1892 and 1934 (accession 2019.058), records of the Alumnae Association dating from 1896 to 1964 (accession 2019.057), and personal papers of the third and final principal, Eurith Trabue Rebasz, dating from 1863 to 1931 (accession 2019.056). The bulk of the collection consists of ledger books containing operating records and grades, while the Alumnae Assocation records include letters, memoranda, clippings and notes. Mrs. Rebasz's papers include letters and ephemera.

This collection consists of the papers of Riley Stevens, a broker and notary in Canandaigua, New York. It consists of accounts, mortgages, letters, bills and receipts. The materials date from 1841 to 1885.

This volume appears to be John W. Stebbins' personal scrapbook of Odd Fellows activities. Includes articles about Stebbins' election to the post of Grand Sire, the highest position in the Odd Fellows organization. The content of the scrapbook dates between 1870 and 1892.

Smith, Virginia Jeffrey
Virginia Jeffrey Smith was a Rochester artist and art critic. In the fall of 1950, she took over authorship of Artists and Craftsmen, a column created by long-time Times-Union journalist Amy H. Croughton, who was also the paper's theater and film critic. The last column authored by Virginia Jeffrey Smith appeared on September 9, 1965. Artists and Craftsmen covered the Rochester arts scene, including exhibitions at the Memorial Art Gallery, the Eastman House, and numerous smaller galleries. During the years that Smith authored the column, it reflected her personal interests as an artist, a local historian, and a world traveler. In addition to documenting the careers of local mid-century artists, including Ralph Avery, John Menihan, and James D. Havens, the column chronicles the growth of Rochester's art institutions and movements, such as the Arena Group, the Genesee Group, the Rochester Art Club, the annual Finger Lakes Exhibition, and the early years of the Clothesline Arts Festival. The collection includes copies of the published column (both loose clippings and clippings gathered into scrapbooks), draft versions of other writings by Smith, background notes on art and artists, a small amount of graphic materials, correspondence related to the column, and a small amount of personal ephemera.
