Sovern, Michael I.

This collection consists of the correspondence and subject files of Columbia University President Michael I. Sovern. It also contains his speeches as Columbia University Law School Dean (1970-1978), Columbia University Provost (1979) and Columbia University President (1980-1993). The speeches span from 1972 to 1993 and are arranged in chronological order. There are materials related to the City Charter Revision Commission.

Bermingham, Edward J. (Edward John), 1887-1958

Correspondence of Dwight D. Eisenhower and his friend Bermingham who first met when Eisenhower became President of Columbia. During his tenure as Columbia's President and later, as commander of the Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers Europe (SHAPE) for the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), Eisenhower exchanged long letters with Bermingham, outlining in detail his views of world affairs. When Eisenhower became President of the United States, the correspondence continued, and the two men met at least twice at the White House. The collection also includes a photograph of Eisenhower, inscribed to Bermingham; letters to Bermingham from Antonio Bermúdez, director of PEMEX, and Alexander Makinsky, president of the Coca Cola Export Corporation in Paris; and some correspondence between Bermingham and Eisenhower's aides.

Kirk, Grayson L. (Grayson Louis), 1903-1997

The collection contains correspondence, memoranda, drafts, committee meeting reports, speeches, calendars, etc. of Grayson L. Kirk, former Columbia University President. Also included are books from his library. There are also materials deemed by the Office of the President staff as "personal," meaning not directly related to Columbia University. These included the records of the Jacob R. Schiff Charitable Trust and the New York World's Fair 1964-1965.

McGill, William J. (William James), 1922-1997

Correspondence, memoranda, notes, speeches, scientific data, photographs and printed material. Half of the collection relates to McGill's research and writing in the fields of experimental and mathematical psychology, particularly in the psychology of perception, and contains drafts of papers, notes, class materials and works by others. Also included are files relating to McGill's chairmanship of the Carnegie Commission on the Future of Public Broadcasting, files pertaining to his participation on the New York State Special Advisory Panel on Medical Malpractice, and some papers from his chairmanship of the psychology department, and later chancellorship, of the University of California, San Diego. Some personal correspondence and documents are also included. Among the cataloged correspondence are John W. Gardiner, Edward M. Kennedy, Margaret Mead, Daniel Patrick Moynihan, Jonas Salk, and Beverly Sills
