Saffron, Morris Harold

Letters, manuscripts, printed ephemera and photoreproductions collected by Saffron. The collection reflects Dr. Saffron's two avocations: book collecting and the history of medicine. Of particular importance are three reels of microfilms of Hunterian manuscripts at the University of Glasgow Library. William Hunter (1718-1783) was a Scottish physician. In addition, there is an autograph signed manuscript by John Martyn titled "To the Author of the Grubstreet Journal" 1731-32; letters published in "The Grub-Street Journal" concerning Richard Bentley's edition of Milton; a letter from Stephen Phillips to [Sir Sidney Colvin]; and poetry of Emily Winthrop Miles

Vernadsky, George, 1887-1973

Correspondence, manuscripts, documents, photographs, subject files, printed materials, and memorabilia of historian George Vernadsky (Georgii Vladimirovich Vernadskii; 1887-1973). Most of the collection consists of his personal and professional papers, circa 1918-1973. Sizable groups of materials also concern members of his family, especially his wife Nina (1884-1971); his father, scientist Vladimir I. Vernadskii (1863-1945); his mother Nataliia E. Vernadskaia (1860-1943); and his sister Nina V. Toll' (1898-circa 1976).

Butor, Michel

Correspondence, papers, manuscripts, documents, photographs, and printed materials. Much of the correspondence concerns his American teaching and lecture engagements, primarily at the University of Louisville. There are also letters from his colleagues in France, including Françoise Van Rossum-Guyon, with a copy of her Introduction to an edition of Balzac's LE PÈRE GORIOT with Butor's critical letter for the publisher. There are critical and biographical manuscripts about Butor, and several printed works, each inscribed with a note by its author.

Hawk, David R.
The collection includes 52 photographs and a map that were part of the Cambodia Witness Exhibit (1983). It also includes the exhibit brochure, catalog list, and a file on the exhibit from its coordinator, Joan Libby. The photographs were taken by David Hawk during two trips to Cambodia in March 1981 and April 1982. The exhibit includes images of the prison at Tuol Sleng, prisoners (from existing files), survivors, mass graves, and the destruction of temples and churches. The exhibit was curated by Joan Libby for Amnesty International (USA)

Artamonova, Olǵa Mikhaĭlovna, 1903-

Manuscripts and photographs of Ol'ga Mikhailovna Artamonova including her memoirs, entitled "Moia sem'ia", and family photographs from the early 20th century. The memoirs concern the Depreradovich family, Siberia in the early 20th century, the Revolution and the Civil War, and the emigration in the Far East and the U.S.

Volkova, Marianna

Photographs of 20 Soviet musicians, writers, scholars, and others by Volkova. Included are Aram Khachaturian, Bella Akhmadulina, Evgeniĭ Evtushenko, and Viktor Shklovskiĭ. The photographs were shown at Volkova's "Faces" exhibition at Columbia University in April-May, 1978. Also included are two copies of the exhibition's program.

Reĭngardt, I︠U︡. A

Reingardt's memoirs are in the form of twenty-one brief essays devoted chiefly to Civil War events in the area of Ekaterinodar. He discusses general Kant︠s︡erov and the Markov Division (with which he fought) and also includes excerpts from the memoirs of fellow officers (notably V. P. Stet︠s︡enko) and contemporary newspaper accounts. In addition, there are brief descriptions of historical military events and nineteenth century military figures. The essay entitled "Vospominanii︠a︡ uchastnikov o Gen. Kant︠s︡erove" includes several photographs of Markov Division parades, training and encampments.

Correspondence, memoranda, position papers, campaign materials, speeches, photographs, and printed materials relating primarily to Samuels' unsuccessful 1970 campaign for governor of New York. Included with the collection are campaign materials for other candidates, and campaign buttons for Samuels, Nelson A. Rockefeller, and others. Major correspondents include William Averell Harriman, Hubert Horatio Humphrey, LeRoi Jones, Edward I. Koch, John V. Lindsay, Robert Moses, and Edmund S. Muskie.

Hamlin, Arthur T.

Files of Hamlin, dealing with the American Library Association's (ALA) aid to Italian libraries to help them restore book manuscripts and other library materials after the 1966 floods in Florence. These papers contain correspondence with American and Italian librarians and related memoranda and reports. In addition there are photographs, clippings, pamphlets, monographs, and serials documenting the flood, its aftermath and restoration efforts. The chief correspondents are Paul N. Sidorova, Elena Nikolaevna

The collection consists of correspondence, manuscripts by Sidorova and a photograph, presumably of Sidorova (1970). The manuscripts (signed Evgenii︠a︡ Mor, her pseudonym) include short stories, poems and essays about the second world war. Particularly noteworthy are long essays on the painter Kuzḿa Petrov-Vodkin (including lists of his works in private collections) and the playwright Evgeniĭ Shvart︠s︡, both of whom Sidorova knew personally. There are also brief essays about the writers Alekseĭ Pli︠u︡shkin (Ugri︠u︡mov) and Ivanov-Razumnik.

Correspondence, subject files, manuscripts, photographs, slides, and printed materials relating to criminal justice and economic history documenting the work of Henry Cohen. The correspondence consists of two series, general correspondence and correspondence relating to "Criminal Justice History." There are manuscripts by Cohen for "Interpretive History of American Political Economy" (unpublished?) and other manuscripts including the introduction to the film script "Public Enemy." There are manuscripts by other authors submitted for publication in "Criminal Justice History" with related photographs. The subject files relate to "Business and Politics in America" with related photographs, the Spater artistic censorship case at the University of California, discussion material relating to the "National Right to Work Legislation" "Brutal Justice" with related slides, the Geese National Theater Company, the Pritzker Architecture Prize and the paper "Vicisitudes of an Absentee Landlord." The photographs consist of two pictures of Vlodarskiĭ. There are three folders of articles by Vlodarskiĭ clipped from a variety of technical journals.

The Barry Miles Papers contains correspondence, manuscripts, photographs, and printed materials concerned with Miles' literary activities in the London counterculture. Included are letters and manuscripts from William S. Burroughs and Allen Ginsberg, among numerous others. This collection also includes material used by Miles in the research and writing of his work Ginsberg: A Biography as well as from his editorship of the annotated edition of Ginsberg's Howl.

Greek Press and Information Service in New York

Correspondence, reports, memoranda, news releases, photographs, sound recordings, financial records, and printed material. These files, more than three-quarters of which are in the Greek language, contain correspondence with Greeks, Greek-Americans, Greek officials, and diplomats, American congressmen, senators and other elected officials, print and media journalists, publishers, and other Americans regarding the dictatorship of the Greek colonels from 1967 to 1974. Also, routine requests for information on Greece, including the loan of audio-visual and pictorial materials, for use by journalists, teachers, students, publishers, etc. The files of letters dealing with the Greek Junta and Greek-American relations contain numerous photocopies of letters from American government and elected officials. Also included are nine sound recordings of Greek language broadcasts in the United States; pamphlets on Greece, and clippings from American newspapers on Greece and Greek-American relations; and photographs of one 1971 anti-Junta demonstration held in New York City. There are some financial records dating back to 1956, including account books, check registers, and cancelled checks.

Nickerson, Eugene H (Eugene Hoffman), 1918-

Personal, administrative, political, and investigative files of Nickerson. The papers deal almost entirely with his eight years as County Executive, and consist of correspondence, memoranda, manuscripts of speeches, notes, press releases, photographs, and clippings. Among the major correspondents are James A. Farley, Hubert H. Humphrey, Robert F. Kennedy, Edward I. Koch, and Percy E. Sutton. The Investigation Files, which amount to nearly half the collection, document investigation into corruption and mismanagement in numerous Long Island businesses and governmental departments. These investigations, instigated and overseen by Nickerson, were carried out largely by the Commissioner of Accounts, Milton Lipson, and later by Samuel Greason, the first governmental ombudsman in the United States. These files consist primarily of memoranda, transcripts of hearings, payroll and financial accounts, notes, and tape recordings.

Stegman, Andrea-Aleksandra, 1897-

Her memoirs recount her childhood and education in Russia as a member of a Baltic-German family, her life in Finland after the February Revolution, her service as a nurse in St. Petersburg during World War I, and as a member of a Red Cross mission charged with caring for prisoners of war in Kiev and Moscow during the Civil War. She also describes her arrest and imprisonment in 1919 as well as her brother's experiences in Li︠u︡bi︠a︡nka prison during World War II. The memoirs (416p.) are in the form of a carbon copy typescript and are accompanied by original photographs. Also included in the collection are reprints of several articles published by her husband, Helmuth Stegman, in the 1960's.

Leĭman, Konstantin Stepanovich

The collection consists of manuscripts and memoirs dealing with the history of the 97th Livland Infantry Regiment and the Vilnius Military Academy. The memoirs concern the 6th Hussar Regiment of Major-General Iakov P. Kuliev, and Colonel Nikolai Nikolaevich Alekseev, commander of the 97th Livland Regiment. Included in the manuscript on the 97th Livland Regiment are photographs, drawings and clippings.

Efimovskiĭ, Evgeniĭ Amvrosévich, 1884-1964

The papers consist of manuscripts, photographs, and printed materials. Among the manuscripts are his typescript memoirs entitled "Vstrechi na zhiznennom puti" (53 pp.), which discuss his youth, student days in the history faculty of Moscow University, his work in the Constitutional Democratic (Kadet) Party, and the 1917 Revolution; and manuscripts of articles, some concerning the emigre monarchist movement. There are four photographs of Efimovskiĭ. Printed materials include offprints of his articles.

Included are Konstantin Troĭt︠s︡kiĭ's memoirs of his education and years of government service, entitled "Iz vospominaniĭ Chinovnika Osobykh Porucheniĭ V-ogo Klassa pri Ministre Vnutrennykh Del" (151 p.); two short typescripts by Natalii︠a︡ Troĭt︠s︡kai︠a︡ discussing women's education in pre-revolutionary Russia and the Russian School in Indianapolis, near Saõ Paulo; and photographs and printed items relating to the Troĭt︠s︡kiĭ family and the emigration in Brazil.

A founding member of the Beat Generation, Carr was a friend of Allen Ginsberg, Jack Kerouac, and other beat writers, and attended Columbia University in 1944. The Lucien Carr Papers contain correspondence with prominent Beat writers Allen Ginsberg and Jack Kerouac, as well as some clippings and ephemera.

Wilbur, C. Martin (Clarence Martin), 1908-1997

Correspondence, subject files, manuscripts and printed materials documenting the work of C. Martin Wilbur, George Sansom Professor Emeritus of Chinese History, Columbia University. Correspondence with non-Columbia organizations includes the Institute of Pacific Relations, Far Eastern Association, INDUSCO, Council on Foreign Relations, Asia Foundation, and American Council of Learned Societies, among others. Subject files relevant to Columbia University include items pertaining to the Department of Chinese and Japanese, later renamed the Department of East Asian Languages and Cultures, as well as teaching files, student files and research projects directed. The manuscript files contain the notes and, in some cases, printed copies of published and unpublished works and public talks. Wilbur's writings and research concentrate on the history and politics of twentieth century China, with emphasis on the Chinese Revolution, 1920-1929, Sun Yat-sen, and communism in China. There are translations of minutes for the first and second Kuomintang Congresses, copies of documents from the Kuomintang Archives, and photographs of members of the Young China Party, Sun Yat-sen and several historical events in the 1920s. Files on fund raising efforts for the Department of East Asian Languages and Cultures and the Wellington Koo Fellowship also contain relevant correspondence. Diamond, Sigmund

Correspondence, manuscripts, subject files and research notes of Sigmund Diamond. Included among the correspondence are Diamond's letters to and from various distinguished members of Columbia University and other academic insitutions, as well as correspondence with many noted sociologists and historians. Included in the manuscripts is Diamond's "In Quest." The subject files comprise material from Diamond's tenure at Columbia and include some material pertaining to his forced departure from Harvard in the 1950's due to his previous communist affiliation, and his active role in maintaining the efficacy of the Freedom of Information Act. The research files include microfilms and notes.

Correspondence, manuscripts, notes, research materals, lectures, speeches, galley proofs, news releases, appointment diaries, photographs, printed materials, audio and video cassettes. The correspondence consists of letters from editors and publishers as well as a selected group of letters from readers reacting to his columns and articles. Among these letters are one or two each from Joseph Alsop, Warren E. Burger, J. William Fulbright, John Kenneth Galbraith and Hubert H. Humphrey. The manuscripts, with corrections, notes and research materials are for his numerous contributions to periodicals, such as the "Letters from.." series in The New Yorker, radio and television scripts, interviews with prominent government officials, such as George Shultz, lectures, speeches, ideas and proposals for books, and an extensive file for his unpublished history of the investment firm, Lehman Brothers Kuhn Loeb, Inc. There is a set of news releases for his column, "Washington Insight" 1965-1984 and for his Los Angeles Times column, 1980-1985. The printed materials include newspaper clippings, articles by Kraft in foreign periodicals and some books from his library. The audio and video cassettes contain interviews with presidents and prime ministers as well as radio and television broadcasts on which Kraft appeared.

Volzhanin-Nizhegorodet︠s︡, A. A. (Aleksandr Alekseevich), 1896-

Correspondence, manuscripts, photographs and printed materials of Volzhanin. The correspondence includes two letters from Aleksandra Tolstai︠a︡. The manuscripts are all by Volzhanin himself, and include memoirs describing his World War I military service, his service in the White Army in Siberia, his arrest and imprisonment until about 1937, his service with the Germans during World War II, and his eventual emigration to the United States. Other manuscripts deal with noted figures in Russian history, the emigre press, and literature. There are a few photographs of Volzhanin and a number of clippings.

Manuscripts, photographs, and printed materials of N. S. Arsen'ev. The collection consists primarily of manuscripts of his writings on theological topics, such as "Glimpses of Ultimate Reality" and "Vom Problem der religösen Uberwindung des Todes." Also included are several photographs of Arsen'ev, and offprints and pamphlets by him.
