Abramovitz, Max, 1908-2004
Max Abramovitz (1908-2004) was an American architect, whose firm Harrison & Abramovitz was one of the leading architectural practices in post-war America. Major commissions include Lincoln Center's Philharmonic Hall and the United Nations complex. The collection contains over 14,500 drawings, over 5,000 photographs, 24 boxes of manuscript material, 7 boxes of oversize material, 23 boxes of financial records, 5 boxes of reprint tear sheets, 36.75 linear feet of specification notebooks, photo albums, sketchbooks, art and artifacts.

Anthony, Wilfrid E. (Wilfrid Edwards), 1878-1948

Included are the architectural drawings pertaining to the Church of St. Vincent Ferrer in New York, N.Y. These drawings include plans, elevations, sections, and details in full-scale, and the dates of the drawings span 1908-1928. The drawings are cataloged separately in CLIO and their call numbers are NYDA98-F0 through NYDA98-F6; their accession numbers are 1996.011.00001 through.00452.

Augenfeld, Felix, 1893-1984
Felix Augenfeld (1893-1984) was a Viennese architect and designer active in Austria, Czechoslovakia, and Croatia prior to 1938, in London from 1938-1939, and in the United States from 1939 until his death. His work consists primarily of residential projects, including apartments, weekend homes, beach houses, and residences, and includes both architecture and interior design. Like other architect-designers of the time, his work included original furniture and textiles to create a cohesive design experience. Augenfeld's design for Sigmund Freud's desk chair, now at the Freud Museum in London is probably his most well-known work. This collection contains photographs, drawings, blueprints, and sketches of over eighty of Augenfeld's projects with the majority focused on his years in America but with a substantial photograph collection that illustrates his Viennese work. Beyond project records, the collection includes a number of Augenfeld's professional papers that contextualize his work through his research material, portfolios, and scrapbooks, and his personal papers which include his own writings, poetry, correspondence, and photographs of friends and family.

Bunshaft, Gordon, 1909-1990
Gordon Bunshaft (1909-1990) was an American architect who, as a partner at Skidmore, Owings & Merrill, had a significant impact on large-scale corporate architecture. His projects include such significant urban office towers as the Lever House in midtown Manhattan, as well as modern office campuses set in natural landscapes, including such examples as the American Can Company in Greenwich, Connecticut or the Connecticut General Life Insurance Company headquarters in Bloomfield, Connecticut. Additionally, his interest in art caused him to actively integrate work by well-known modern artists into the public plazas and interiors of SOM's projects. The professional aspects of this collection can be found in clippings, project photography, oral history records, and publications, however, the majority of the collection is personal and reflects the life of Gordon and his wife Nina Bunshaft. Through correspondence, snapshots, objects, and personal papers the collection focuses on the Bunshafts' friends, their travels, and their impressive art collection of both modern and ancient sculptures and paintings.

Bunshaft, Gordon, 1909-1990

Collection consists of sixty original architectural and furniture drawings for Lever House in New York City, drawn between 1950 and 1952. Most sheet are graphite on paper, with a smaller group of sepia diazo prints with extensive graphite annotations. All sheets were treated by a paper conservator and are now encapsulated in polyester film.

Cain, Walker O., 1915-1993
Walker O. Cain (1915-1993) was an American architect associated with the firms of McKim, Mead & White (1940-1961), Steinmann, Cain & White (1961-1965), Steinmann & Cain (1965-1967), Walker O. Cain & Associates (1967-1978), and Cain, Farrell and Bell (1978-1986). Collection consists chiefly of travel sketches, cartoons, invitations, and other ephemera. The collection also includes correspondence with Alexander Calder and photographs of the sculptor and his works; photographs and printed materials related to the firm of McKim, Mead & White; Scrapbooks; Medals; and a few architectural drawings.

Architectural drawings (no longer in current use by Facilities Management), transferred to the Avery Architectural & Fine Arts Library from the Dept. of Facilities Management pertaining to proposals, construction, alteration and addition of properties formerly used or owned, and buildings demolished or still extant. The dates of the materials span 1895 to today. The drawings include plans showing the heating and ventilation systems, electrical and plumbing details, and some original construction materials. Some of the buildings represented in this collection are: Avery Hall; Earl Hall; St. Paul's Chapel; Teachers College; Low Library; Ferris Booth; and Uris Hall, as well as details of fences; steps; statues; and bronze railings. Some of the architects hired by the University include McKim, Mead & White, Howells & Stokes, James Gamble Rogers, and Allen & Collens, as well as builder and architect R. Guastavino Co. who was responsible for the domes and vaults of St. Paul's Chapel, Earl Hall, and the Van Amringe Memorial

The four drawings include: Frieze detail (Anthemion Band) : ink and graphite on paper (33 x 49 cm) ; Plan and elevation for the fly-doors at the entrances of the New Custom House, N.Y. : pen and ink on paper, signed (33 x 40 1/2 cm) ; Plan of the Basement of the New Customs House, New York : Ink, brown wash, green wash on paper mounted on linen (64 x 97 4/5 cm) ; Plan of the Flagging of the Principal Floor of New Custom House, N.Y. : Ink on paper mounted on linen (59 x 93 1/3 cm). Condition: The two larger drawings are heavily varnished and stained. A medium size portion of the "Plan and elevation for the fly-doors" has been cut.

Gehron, William, 1887-1958

The collection contains 290 drawings by American architect William Gehron for projects in the New York area. Projects represented are: Queens Borough Hall, 1939-40 (74 drawings); P.S. 191, 1952 (25 drawings); Convalescent Day Camp, Welfare Island, 1937 (15 drawings); Micellaneous Housing Projects, 1935 (25 drawings); Proposed Plaza for Broadway and 122nd Street, 1936 (1 drawing); World War II Memorial in Watermill, Long Island, NY, 1950 (6 drawings); Harlem Hospital OPD, 1939 (77 drawings); Studies for MacDonald Observatory, 1931 (28 drawings); and Utica State Hospital, 1949 (41 drawings). An rendering by Hugh Ferriss of the State Educational Building and Memorial Pylons in Harrisburg, PA was donated in 2004 (acq. 2004.005).

Hadden & Gedney

Three sheets giving two plans and two elevations for a public building (presumably a court house - three of the rooms are designated on the plan as 'clerk''sheriff', and 'surrogate'). There are two facades and it is difficult to tell which is the front and which is the back; one is marked by three segmental arches with a recessed porch behind; the other also has a recessed porch but has a more formal (and more up-to-date) frontispiece in the Greek Revival style, with two pilasters on either side and two square columns in the center, flanking door. Also the roof cornice of this facade has a long low rectangular panel centered over the entryway. These motifs are close to those shown in American builder's pattern books of the 1830s and 40s. The builders' manuals and pattern books of the 19th century were the do-it-yourself manuals of their era, and for builder-architects like Hadden & Gedney, were important resources for construction techniques and design details.

Harrison, Wallace K (Wallace Kirkman), 1895-1981
The Wallace K. Harrison architectural drawings and papers consists of architectural drawings, photographs, correspondence, notes, speeches, manuscripts, press releases, clippings, memoranda, printed material, job lists, curriculam vitae, contracts, articles, and other material related to Harrison's architectural projects. The collection also contains a significant amount of material regarding Harrison's position as director of the Office of Inter-American Affairs, director of planning of the United Nations Headquarters and biographical material. Approximately a third of the collection is made up of photographs. Photographers include Wendy Barrows, Shirley Burden, George Cserna, Y[uzo] Nagata, and Ezra Stoller, among many others. There is also a collection of 148 art books that belonged to Harrison referred to as his "doodle books." A list of these books with brief descriptions of where Harrison drew in them is contained in the finding aid. Projects documented include Lincoln Center, Metropolitan Opera House, Rockefeller Center, Albany Mall (Empire State Plaza), United Nations, X City, ALCOA building, Corning Glass building, First Presbyterian Church, La Guardia Airport, Socony-Mobil building, Battery Park City, Radio City Music Hall, New York World's Fair (1939 and 1964), Institute for Advanced Study, National Academy of Science, Pahlavi National Library Competition, Oberlin College's Hall Auditorium, Pershing Memorial, Rockefeller University, Hopkins Center, The Anchorage, Avila Hotel, and numerous other buildings and residences.

Lowell, Guy, 1870-1927

The architectural drawings found at "Natirar" at the time the property was acquired by Somerset County, in 2003, include those relating to the original designs by Guy Lowell and Henry J. Hardenbergh between 1910 and 1912, and those relating to the alterations and renovations made in the late 1940s under the direction of York and Sawyer. The drawings are organized by architect, which, in effect, also organizes the drawings by date ranges. Drawings that bear the names of various subcontractors have been organized by subcontractor but are filed with reference to the relevant principal architect. In addition to the drawings pertaining to "Natirar," the collection includes copies of three drawings by architect William Hanford Beers (1856-1932) of the "Gedney Farm" residence of Howard Willets and Mary Macy Willets at White Plains, New York, which was constructed circa 1898 (see photographs of the Willets residence in the July 1901 issue of The American Architect and Building News). William H. Beers' wife, Alice Macy, was a first cousin once removed to sisters Mary Macy Willets and Kate Macy Ladd.

Muschenheim, William

Architectural drawings, correspondence, accounts, estimates, specifications, invoices, contracts, samples, invoices, and other material related to William Muschenheim's projects. The William Muschenheim Architectural Drawings and Papers span 1929-1957, with bulk dates 1931-1950. Muschenheim's papers document 130 separate jobs, and the visual material (described in RLIN VIM), consists of 3081 sheets of drawings. The projects mainly represent Muschenheim's work in New York City, but also include work in Albany (NY), Amenia (NY), Bridgehampton (NY), Chappaqua (NY), Hampton Bays (NY), Malverne (NY), Massapequa (NY), Nassau Point (Long Island), Washington (CT), Washington DC, Westhampton Beach (NY), and Woodstock (NY), among other locations. William Muschenheim also had numerous clients which included the following family members: Carl Muschenheim, Elsa Muschenheim, and Frederick A. Muschenheim. In addition to the many clients for whom he did alteration work, Muschenheim also worked with a wide variety of companies including Bigelow Carpet Company, C.G. Flygare Inc., Excel Metal Cabinet Co., F. Schumacher & Co., Famaes Development, Hans Knoll, Howard & Schaffer, Inc., Kurt Versen Lamps, Inc., Ledlin Light Designers, Portland Cement Association, and Thonet Brothers, among many others

Pfeiffer, Carl, 1834-1888

The bulk of the collection (292 drawings) features original drawings for the 1889 publication of Carl Pfeiffer's designs for American mansions and cottages. These are a mix of ink on paper, linen and tracing paper, as well as pencil on trace. Also included are a set of 7 drawings for a private home on Madison at 25th Street -- these are in ink and watercolor on paper, with a great level of detail -- and an illuminated monogram in a fantasy landscape.

Saarinen, Eero, 1910-1961

Collection consists of 51 reprographic architectural working drawings for the TWA Terminal A at John F. Kennedy International Airport in Queens, N.Y., drawn between 1958 and 1961. All sheets are diazo print on paper, with a very few bearing graphite and/or colored pencil annotations. Earlier drawings note Eero Saarinen as the architect of record; later drawings note Eero Saarinen and Associates. Architectural working drawings are stored in numerical order, sheets 2 through 121, with some sheets lacking.

Stokes, I. N. Phelps (Isaac Newton Phelps), 1867-1944

Correspondence, specifications, contracts, invoices, financial statements, memoranda, and architectural drawings pertaining to the construction of St. Paul's Chapel (Columbia University, New York, N.Y.), a project designed by Howells & Stokes, and by Stokes independently. Correspondence is between Howells & Stokes and Columbia University officials, contractors, and suppliers, including Nicholas Murray Butler, R. Guastavino Co., Tiffany Studios, Coppède, Paul Manship, and McKim, Mead & White, as well as Stokes' aunts Olivia Egleston Phelps Stokes and Caroline Phelps Stokes.

Taliesin Associated Architects
The collection includes the project files and architectural drawings of the Taliesin Associated Architects, the firm that was established after the death of Frank Lloyd Wright in 1959. Projects include commissions that were left on Wright's desk at the time of his death as well as independent commissions and renovation work. Over 1,000 architectural projects are represented either in the paper records, the architectural drawings, or both.

Williams & Barratt

The collection represents the span of Williams' architectural practice through drawings, photographs and a very small amount of papers. The majority of the collection consists of working drawings for a select number of projects. These projects include the Holmes residence "the Chimneys" on Long Island, the alteration and addition for the Donnell branch of the New York Public Library and the main branch, and the Rutherford Free Public Library. Also included are the New Milford Historical Society and New Milford Public Library as well as the United States Embassy building in Tokyo, Japan as well as other smaller projects. A wide range of projects are represented in presentation drawings, largely color renderings on board. These drawings consist of projects mainly on the East Coast including libraries, commercial work, residential work, schools, memorials, office buildings, a railroad station, a club, a post office, a hospital as well as unidentified projects. Notable projects include the Carstadt Memorial Municipal building, Essex County Country Club, Hackensack Golf Clubhouse, the National Academy of Design and several projects in Rutherford, New Jersey. Studies for executed projects are also included as well as studies are of other architects' work to serve as inspiration to Williams. Some of the Photostats in the collection are reproductions of original drawings. Photographs mainly document the exterior of a building while some interior views are included especially for the Holmes residence. A small amount of large-scale photographs mounted on board for display are also included. Miscellaneous papers are included for the Holmes residence and the New Milford Public Library. Finally, a poster and two notebooks comprised of notes, sketches and calculations for various projects complete the collection.

Wines, James, 1932-

This collection documents the projects and activities of SITE, an architecture and environmental design firm founded in 1970 by James Wines, with material dating from the early 1970s to 2017 (bulk 1990s). The collection also includes a small selection of James Wines' papers. The SITE records include project files, drawings and sketches, photographic material, including a significant portion of SITE's slide collection, and marketing, exhibition and office records. Many of the project files document SITE's Green Architecture phase of the 1990s and more recent projects, including lesser known commercial work, such as restaurants and coffee shops. Much of this material relates to projects which have not been widely published, and reveals the breadth of the firm's practice beyond the major projects for which they are known. Many of the photographs and slides document the construction of SITE's experimental projects from the 1970s and 1980s. James Wines' papers include writings, lectures, research notes, limited correspondence, business plans, grant proposals, and documents related to publications, exhibitions, product design, and education projects.

James Wines (1932–) is an artist, architect and professor, best known for his interdisciplinary art and architectural practice and work leading the firm S.I.T.E. (Sculpture In The Environment) which he co-founded with Alison Sky in 1970.
