Correspondence, manuscripts, documents, photographs, subject files, printed materials, and memorabilia of historian George Vernadsky (Georgii Vladimirovich Vernadskii; 1887-1973). Most of the collection consists of his personal and professional papers, circa 1918-1973. Sizable groups of materials also concern members of his family, especially his wife Nina (1884-1971); his father, scientist Vladimir I. Vernadskii (1863-1945); his mother Nataliia E. Vernadskaia (1860-1943); and his sister Nina V. Toll' (1898-circa 1976).

Correspondence, manuscripts, photographs and printed materials of Vlodarskii. The correspondence dates from the 1960's and chiefly concerns Vlodarsiĭ's meeting Nikita Khrushchev during World War II. The photographs consist of two pictures of Vlodarskiĭ. There are three folders of articles by Vlodarskiĭ clipped from a variety of technical journals.

Her memoirs recount her childhood and education in Russia as a member of a Baltic-German family, her life in Finland after the February Revolution, her service as a nurse in St. Petersburg during World War I, and as a member of a Red Cross mission charged with caring for prisoners of war in Kiev and Moscow during the Civil War. She also describes her arrest and imprisonment in 1919 as well as her brother's experiences in Li︠u︡bi︠a︡nka prison during World War II. The memoirs (416p.) are in the form of a carbon copy typescript and are accompanied by original photographs. Also included in the collection are reprints of several articles published by her husband, Helmuth Stegman, in the 1960's.

The papers consist of manuscripts, photographs, and printed materials. Among the manuscripts are his typescript memoirs entitled "Vstrechi na zhiznennom puti" (53 pp.), which discuss his youth, student days in the history faculty of Moscow University, his work in the Constitutional Democratic (Kadet) Party, and the 1917 Revolution; and manuscripts of articles, some concerning the emigre monarchist movement. There are four photographs of Efimovskiĭ. Printed materials include offprints of his articles.

Correspondence, subject files, manuscripts and printed materials documenting the work of C. Martin Wilbur, George Sansom Professor Emeritus of Chinese History, Columbia University. Correspondence with non-Columbia organizations includes the Institute of Pacific Relations, Far Eastern Association, INDUSCO, Council on Foreign Relations, Asia Foundation, and American Council of Learned Societies, among others. Subject files relevant to Columbia University include items pertaining to the Department of Chinese and Japanese, later renamed the Department of East Asian Languages and Cultures, as well as teaching files, student files and research projects directed. The manuscript files contain the notes and, in some cases, printed copies of published and unpublished works and public talks. Wilbur's writings and research concentrate on the history and politics of twentieth century China, with emphasis on the Chinese Revolution, 1920-1929, Sun Yat-sen, and communism in China. There are translations of minutes for the first and second Kuomintang Congresses, copies of documents from the Kuomintang Archives, and photographs of members of the Young China Party, Sun Yat-sen and several historical events in the 1920s. Files on fund raising efforts for the Department of East Asian Languages and Cultures and the Wellington Koo Fellowship also contain relevant correspondence. Correspondence, manuscripts, subject files and research notes of Sigmund Diamond. Included among the correspondence are Diamond's letters to and from various distinguished members of Columbia University and other academic insitutions, as well as correspondence with many noted sociologists and historians. Included in the manuscripts is Diamond's "In Quest." The subject files comprise material from Diamond's tenure at Columbia and include some material pertaining to his forced departure from Harvard in the 1950's due to his previous communist affiliation, and his active role in maintaining the efficacy of the Freedom of Information Act. The research files include microfilms and notes.

Manuscripts, photographs, and printed materials of N. S. Arsen'ev. The collection consists primarily of manuscripts of his writings on theological topics, such as "Glimpses of Ultimate Reality" and "Vom Problem der religösen Uberwindung des Todes." Also included are several photographs of Arsen'ev, and offprints and pamphlets by him.

The collection includes photocopies of letters by Josef Cardinal Mindszenty and an undated photograph of Pope Paul VI. The arranged correspondence dates from 1947 to 1980. There are manuscripts by a number of Hungarian emigres as well as by Pfeiffer himself. The subject files contain information on the Assembly of Captive European Nations. Among the printed materials are 49 folders of newspaper articles by or about Pfeiffer. In addition, there are seven reels of 7 1/2" audio tape containing interviews with Pfeiffer.

The collection documents American attorney Marshall MacDuffie's work as chief of the United Nations Relief and Rehabilitation Administration's Mission to the Ukraine, and his trip to the Soviet Union in 1953.

Correspondence, memoranda, photoreproductions of manuscript excerpts by Kafka, publicity files, production records, and printed materials for the works of the Austrian author, Franz Kafka, in German and English translations, 1940-1977. These extant files were set aside by David Rome, the former president of Schocken Books, after the firm was purchased by Pantheon Books, a division of Random House, several years ago. The files consist mainly of production files for the first American editions of THE GREAT WALL OF CHINA (1946), LETTERS TO MILENA (1948), ERZAHLUNGEN UND KLEINE PROSA (1957), and FRANZ KAFKA: BRIEFE (l958). Also included is a publicity file aimed at American Jewish organizations and college and university German departments promoting SAMLICHE WERKE edited by Max Brod as well as his biography of Kafka, and a marked master galley proof for PARABLES AND PARADOXES (1958). Also included are photocopies and mimeograph copies of playscripts based on Kafka's DIARY and METAMORPHOSES and a script by Michael McClure, JOSEPHINE, based on a character of the same name in Kafka's story, THE MOUSE FOLK. There is correspondence with Professor Heinz Pollitzer concerning the promotion of publishing Kafka's writings in the early 1960s. The printed materials are chiefly book reviews of Kafka's publications and some scholarly articles on Kafka.
