Correspondence, memoranda and reports on the controversy surrounding the forced retirement of Benjamin Beckhart. The collection consists of the files of three Columbia professors involved in the case: Harold Barger, professor of economics and Robert K. Webb, professor of history, who were chairmen of the Columbia chapter of the American Association of University Professors, 1959-1964 and 1964-1965, respectively; and Arthur Robert Burns, professor of economics, a member of the Committee on Conference of the University Council, which advised the President on matters of tenure, dismissal and retirement. Included is the correspondence of Beckhart, Barger, Burns, Webb, President Grayson Kirk, Courtney C. Brown, Dean of the School of Business, Harry M. Jones, professor of law, other Columbia faculty and officials of the national office of the AAUP. The reports and memoranda are chiefly those issued by the Committee on Conference.

These book manuscripts include the corrected typescripts of: "Analytical philosophy of action" (Cambridge University Press, 1973); "Analytical philosophy of knowledge" (Cambridge University Press, 1968); "Jean-Paul Sartre" (New York, Viking, 1974) with a.ms. & galley proofs; and "Nietzsche and morality" (New York, Macmillan, 1965).

Correspondence, manuscripts, subject files and research notes of Sigmund Diamond. Included among the correspondence are Diamond's letters to and from various distinguished members of Columbia University and other academic insitutions, as well as correspondence with many noted sociologists and historians. Included in the manuscripts is Diamond's "In Quest." The subject files comprise material from Diamond's tenure at Columbia and include some material pertaining to his forced departure from Harvard in the 1950's due to his previous communist affiliation, and his active role in maintaining the efficacy of the Freedom of Information Act. The research files include microfilms and notes.

Maurice Valency was a mid 20th Century playwright working in New York City. This collection contains manuscripts of articles, plays, teleplays, librettos, and the first draft of the book, The Flower and the Castle: An Introduction to Modern Drama, written by Valency.

Miner's correspondence, manuscripts, typescripts, manuscript and typescript notes, and printed materials relating to the history of Columbia University. Interfiled with Miner's papers are the correspondence, manuscripts, and notes of Columbia librarian Roger Howson (1882-1962) who had been writing a history of the University at the time of his retirement in 1948. Howson and Miner's correspondence is chiefly with Columbia University administrators, faculty, staff, and alumni and deals entirely with the history of the university. The two major Columbia correspondents are Provost Frank D. Fackenthal and Secretary Philip M. Hayden. There are manuscript and typescript drafts of chapters and parts of chapters by Howson and Miner, but neither's history was ever completed or published. These drafts along with the related correspondence, notes, and typescript copies of original manuscripts from Columbia's archives and manuscript collections are filed together under the appropriate headings in the Name and Subject Files. In addition there are two partially completed typescript drafts of each history.

The bulk of the papers of Hungarian economic sociologist Karl Polanyi (1886-1964) originate from Polanyi's time as an adjunct and emeritus professor at Columbia University (1947-1963) and include manuscripts written during that time, professional correspondence, Ford Foundation and faculty seminar memorandum, research notes and files, and lectures.

Correspondence, manuscripts, typescripts, conference papers, scientific drawings, photographs, and printed material. This collection consists chiefly of Halford's manuscripts and typescripts of his writings for scientific journals and papers presented at various conferences and symposiums with related correspondence of colleagues. Also included are files on the teaching of chemistry with reference to practices at Columbia, photographs of his spectrometers, a copy of his patent for Recording Spectrometers, and a file relating to his participation in a 1959 panel discussion on the future of education sponsored by the Barnard College and Columbia Alumni Clubs of Chicago. The printed material includes reprints and accompanying bibliography of Halford's writings. Also, a photograph taken by Jack Aeby at the test site of the atomic bomb, Alamogordo, N.M., 16 July 1945 has been added to the collection.

These papers include the manuscripts of his fourteen books on European history, his research notes, manuscripts and printed copies of his many articles, lectures, contributions to books, and other notes. There is also some correspondence relating to his writings. In addition there are 16 letters from Albrecht-Carrié to Professor Stephen Koss, discussing University matters and international affairs.

Jack Beeson (1921-2010) was a noted twentieth-century American composer, professor of composition, and the chair of the Columbia University Department of Music from 1968 to 1972. The collection includes scores, correspondence, subject files, scrapbooks, datebooks, drafts of written works, biographical materials, programs, and audio and audiovisual recordings.

Robert Staughton Lynd's papers consist primarily of correspondence, meetings' minutes, proposals, studies, and reports regarding the National Recovery Administration and the Consumers Advisory Board. In addition, there are newspaper and magazine clippings about consumer interests during the early 1930s.
