With the exception of a dozen miscellaneous letters and docuemnts of a routine nature, the collection consists of four scrapbooks of newspaper clippings from a variety of New York City and State newspapers and some memorabilia relating to Hoffman's political life. One facsimile of a Hoffman letter and an autographed visiting card of Horatio C. King have been cataloged.

Also included are the periodicals and publications of the League, scrapbooks arranged chronologically, and "Mailbooks", or volumes of mimeographed reports and announcements which were sent to branches and board members. The files contain much material of the League of Women Voters of New York State as well, and some material pertaining to the national organization. The files document the League's activities in the areas of voter registration, election reform, New York City government, foreign policy, ecology, and numerous other concerns, and contain the records of city, state, and national conventions, annual reports, and Board and Council minutes. Major correspondents include Emanuel Teller, Stanley M. Isaacs, Jacob K. Javits, Robert F. Kennedy, Edward I. Koch, John Vliet Lindsay, Nelson A. Rockefeller, Anna Lord Strauss, and Percy E. Sutton.

Also, correspondence, an informal memoranda to be included in the proposed charter, lists of persons to whom the proposed charter was to be sent, printers' dummies of the act, proofs, and printed copies of the act submitted to the New York State Assembly, May 1, 1923. Much of the correspondence originated from the office of Henry de Forest Baldwin.

Samuel J. Tilden papers, 1794-1886, 1835-1876

Samuel J. Tilden (1814-1886) served as Governor of New York, 1875-1876, and was the Democratic nominee for the Presidency in 1876. Tilden began his career as a corporate lawyer; he served as Corporate Counsel for the City of New York, as a member of the New York State Assembly, and as Chairman of the Democratic National Convention. Monies from his estate contributed to the founding of The New York Public Library. His papers document his political and legal career and are comprised primarily of correspondence, political and legal files, financial documents, writings, speeches, and personal papers dating from 1785 - 1929 (bulk 1832 - 1886).
