Scope and Content:

Included are diary, 1864-1866; nine notebooks on Old Testament lectures; notes on "History of Religion;" and scrapbooks containing articles by himself, material relating to the earliest Hebrew literature, and dealing with his own and Charles A. Brigg's trial, and the judicial case of the Presbyterian Church against Smith.

Biographical / Historical:

Henry Preserved Smith (1847-1927); Presbyterian minister in Ohio and New York; scholar with specializations in Hebrew and Cognate Languages, historical and critical interpretations of the Bible; graduate studies at Lane Theological Seminary, Universities of Leipzig and Berlin; tried for heresy by Presbyterian Church, 1892-1894; Professor of Church history and Davenport Professor of Hebrew and Cognate Languages at Union Theological Seminary, 1917-1925.
