Scope and Content:

The Adolph Julius Rodenbeck Papers contains essays and speeches by Rodenbeck, mostly written during his last year as a student at the University of Rochester (1885), his term as mayor of Rochester (1902-1903), and as New York State Supreme Court Justice (1916-1932).

Biographical / Historical:

Adolph Julius Rodenbeck was born in 1861. He graduated from the University of Rochester in the Class of 1885. He then studied law, and was admitted to the bar in 1887. He began practicing law in Rochester in 1888. He was made the second assistant attorney in 1892, and served as the first assistant from 1892 until 1894. In 1894 he was appointed Corporation Counsel of the City. He served in this post until 1899 when he was elected a member of the New York State Assembly, serving until 1901. He was then elected Mayor of Rochester and held this office from 1902 to 1903. From 1903 to 1912 he served as a judge of the New York Court of Claims, and in 1916 he was appointed a justice to the State Supreme Court. He held this office until his retirement in 1932. Judge Rodenbeck died in 1960.

The Adolph Julius Rodenbeck Papers is open for research use. Researchers are advised to contact the Rare Books Special Collections & Preservation Department prior to visiting. Upon arrival, researchers will also be asked to fill out a registration form and provide photo identification.

In consultation with a curator, reproductions may be made upon request. Permission to publish materials from the collection must be requested from a curator. Researchers are responsible for determining any copyright questions.
