Background

Scope and Content:

Two scrapbooks containing clippings photographs concerning the political career of Dr. Anthony C. Scinta, a member of Rochester City Council starting in 1933. Dr. Scinta, a noted local medical professional, was a reform-oriented Democrat who emphasized the need to reform City government. He was especially interested in the reform of the City's welfare practices.

Biographical / Historical:

Born in Sicily in 1889, Anthony C. Scinta served Rochester's Italian community out of his office at 97 Lyell Avenue for over 50 years. Dr. Scinta trained at the University at Buffalo, returning to Rochester to serve the community in which he was raised. He spoke every Italian dialect except Genoese, and was trusted by a community otherwise largely reliant on folk remedies. Known for making housecalls long after most physicians stopped, he was a supporter of public health intiatives as a City councilman in the 1930s (he ran again in 1953, but was defeated), and supported the creation of a national health system in the 1960s. Dr. Scinta lived at 222 Westminster Road with his wife, Clementine, and three children, Rosalie, Carlotta and Joseph. Dr. Scinta passed away on September 22, 1976.
