Background

Scope and Content:

The Arts Festivals Collection, 1963-1970, includes clippings, pamphlets, and programs from the UB Spring Arts Festival, the Black Arts Festival, and the 2nd Buffalo Festival for the Arts. The collection also includes the San Francisco Mime Troupe fundraiser and broadside.

Biographical / Historical:

The Arts Festival collection includes materials from the University at Buffalo Spring Arts Festivals, 1963-1970. This festival was held on the University at Buffalo Campuses and in places in the surrounding community and its aim was to feature the most current trends in the arts. The festival would showcase musicians, poets, writers, painters, sculptors, theater, and performance artists from around the world. The first festival in 1963 included classical and folk musicians, theater and dance presentations. Each successive festival was larger and featured more artists, musicians, and performers from a broad range of artistic disciplines and there were more artists invited to come perform at U.B. from all around the world. The Arts Festivals collection also includes materials from the Black Arts Festival, 1969 which ran from April 14-April 25 and featured continuing exhibits, panel discussions, dance troupes, lectures, theater workshops, a Dr. Martin Luther king Jr. memorial service, a fashion show, jazz performances, and film screenings. The festival events were held both on campus at U.B. and at other locations in the greater Buffalo area. The Arts Festivals collection also includes materials from the 2nd Annual Buffalo Festival of the Arts, 1968.
