Background

Scope and Content:

This collection was assembled in anticipation of the store’s 100th anniversary in 1967. It consists mainly of promotional materials, including newspaper inserts, merchandise catalogs, and advertisements. There are also several books and some sheet music published by the store; clippings, 1867-1981; a scrapbook documenting the downtown move, 1960; and some photographs of AM&A’s stores and employees.

Biographical / Historical:

Buffalo department store founded in 1867. Robert B. Adam (1833-1904) came to the United States from Scotland in 1857. He worked for the Boston firm of Hogg, Brown and Taylor for ten years and, in 1867, moved to Buffalo. With partners Herbert A. Meldrum and Alexander Whiting, he opened a store on Main St. where the American Hotel had stood. Alexander Whiting retired in 1872. In 1876, William Anderson was admitted to the partnership, and the name of the firm was changed to Adam, Meldrum & Anderson. Robert B. Adam’s younger brother, J.N. Adam, also came to Buffalo from Scotland. He opened his own store across the street from Adam, Meldrum & Anderson. Robert B. Adam II (1863-1940) assumed the presidency of the store upon his father’s death in 1904. Robert B. Adam III became president in 1945. He supervised both the opening of the first AM&A’s branch store at University Plaza in 1947, and the move of the downtown store across Main St. to the former J.N. Adam building in 1960. Adam, Meidrum & Anderson was sold to The Bon Ton Stores in 1994. The downtown store was closed in 1995.
