Scope and Content:

The St. Luke's Methodist Episcopal Church Records spans the period from 1835-1956 and consists of the record books of three Albany churches: the Garrettson Station Methodist Episcopal Church; the Central Avenue Methodist Episcopal Church; and St. Luke's Methodist Episcopal Church. The three churches merged in 1881. The collection is divided into three series, one each for the records of each congregation. There is some overlap in dates when a record book continued from one congregation to the next, such as the Sunday School account book in Series III.

Biographical / Historical:

Garrettson Station Methodist Episcopal Church was founded in 1828 and located on North Pearl Street above Columbia Street. Central Avenue Methodist Episcopal Church was located at 234 Central Avenue and founded in 1869. St. Luke's Methodist Episcopal Church, includes records of the church which resulted when the two above congregations were merged in 1881. The church was located on Clinton Avenue at Lexington Avenue.
