Background

Scope and Content:

The Vanderzee collection spans the period from 1872-1936 and primarily contains documents relating to S. V. Vanderzee’s personal and family life. The collection is divided into 3 series: Wills and business papers, Correspondence, and Ephemera. The collection was acquired by Norman Rice when Pieter Vanderzee sold the contents of his parents’ house (Vint and Helen Sayles Vanderzee).

Biographical / Historical:

The Vanderzees were among Albany’s earliest settlers. Storm Vanderzee was born during a storm at sea, hence his name. He arrived in the new world in 1630. W.S. Vanderzee, Vint’s father, had a flour, feed, and grain store. James Vint, Vint’s grandfather, sold art, antiques and furniture. His company also made furniture. William Sayles Co. was a builder. Vint’s grandfather, Arthur, was the second generation in the business. Joseph Neemes’ (Mrs. Arthur Sayles father) business was Neemes Brothers. They made castings and manufactured stove grates.
