Van Ness, Judith

This collection consists of photographs and documents from the personal papers of Judith Van Ness, a lifelong Rochester resident and former librarian at the Rochester Public Library. The photographs document Rochester buidlings and scenes from the 1970s to the 1990s. The documents include a copy of her essay on draft card burning, undated but likely written in 1966, which provides a first-person account on the topic right from the time during which it became a signifcant form of anti-Vietnam War protest.

The receipes reflect her personal interest in low-sugar and vegetarian cooking at a time when these approaches to eating were first entering the American diet. The collection includes both recipes clipped from various sources and those written out longhand. A guide to the handwriting of various recipe writers is included with the collection.

A collection of eighteen 1940s and 1950s fashion and jewelry illustrations collected by art director Juke Goodman. Artists represented in the collection include René Robert Bouché, Burma Burris, Carl Erickson ("Eric"), Ruth Graftstrom, and Jacqueline Lindner. Goodman served as art director for Saks Fifth Avenue and was a visiting lecturer at Parsons School of Design.
