The University of Rochester Archives is housed within the Department of Rare Books, Special Collections, and Preservation at the University of Rochester and is located in Rush Rhees Library. The Archive's material documents the history of the University from its founding in 1850 to the present, including administrative records, official publications, and collections that record student life. Formats include prints, maps, architectural drawings, photographic media, visual and audio recordings, and artifacts.

The Academic Regalia collection contains robes, hoods, and caps worn by University of Rochester administrators, faculty, students, and trustees at formal events. Descriptions of regalia include the name of the manufacturer (Cotrell and Leonard, for example) when this information is known. Each set of regalia has been assigned a number, which appears before the title of the item(s).

The ADAM International Review Papers contain records from the University of Rochester's affiliation with the literary magazine ADAM. These materials date from 1968 to 1973. The papers also include photocopied manuscripts that the magazine's founder-editor, Miron Grindea, donated to the University. The collection is organized into five series: 1) correspondence, 2) distribution, 3) finances, 4) publicity, and 5) manuscripts.

This collection includes Adviser's Handbooks from the 1971/1972 academic year to the present. Handbooks are organized alphabetically and cover topics such as academic honesty, grades, majors, and studying abroad. The last few pages of some handbooks provide advisers with examples of paperwork such as "add/drop" forms, requests for an incomplete grade, and approval forms for concentrations and minors. The collection also includes some copies of handbooks that have been annotated. In addition to the handbooks themselves, some folders contain correspondence, notes, and information about University programs. Starting in the 2015/2016 academic year, handbooks were produced in electronic form only; printed copies have been included in the collection.

Material of Alice Harriet Colby (1881-1950; U of R Class of 1904; M.A., U of R, 1908) relating to the University of Rochester. Includes material on the girls' basketball team and many photographs of faculty members and campus scenes. Non-University material consists of some photographic albums of summers at Georgian Bay, Pt.-au-Baril, Ontario, Canada, 1907-1909. There is also material on the Y.W.C.A. and its camp at Silver Bay, New York.

Includes minutes of the chapter's meetings (1859-1938, 1947-1960); correspondence relating to the history of the chapter as collected by Harvey F. Morris (class of 1902) and a typescript history of the chapter which he wrote (1936); brief records of members of the chapter (Class of 1883 through Class of 1959); correspondence, 1915-1959; minutes and reports of the Genesee Graduate Chapter; 1911-1940; 1946-1948; 1953-1959; newspaper clippings; and other material related to the fraternity and its Graduate Chapter.

Correspondence (incoming and outgoing) of Hugh A. Smith, Alumni Association Secretary. Subjects of correspondence include the awarding of local alumni association scholarships in Rochester, New York, Buffalo, and Chicago; arrangements for the annual meetings of the Schoolmaster's Club (alumni in the field of education); and fraternity housing on the Oak Hill Campus.

Mainly correspondence to and from Hugh A. Smith, Alumni Secretary from 1922-1936. The correspondence deals with activities of the Associated Alumni such as publishing the Rochester Alumni Review, fund raising, and planning reunions at commencement. The correspondence reveals alumni news, reminiscences, and opinions.

The Atlantic Slave Trade Conference Collected Papers is organized in the order in which the papers were presented. Please note that some papers are drafts. The finished papers (with the exception of Fenoaltea's "Europe in the African Mirror") were published in the book The Atlantic Slave Trade: Effects on Economies, Societies, and Peoples in Africa, the Americas, and Europe, edited by Joseph E. Inikori and Stanley L. Engerman.

Contents include scripts, correspondence, and miscellaneous materials relating to the twelve radio programs, entitled Background of the War News, that Professor Arthur J. May of the University of Rochester Department of History gave over WHAM radio station in 1943. Script no. 11 is missing.

Two notebooks and several subject folders. The notebooks contain mimeographed minutes (1955-1965) and financial records (1962-1965) of the College Cabinet Financial Board. The folders contain material on the Graduate Living Center (mimeographed committee minutes, 1961-1964), the Towers Dormitories (1962-1964), student activities (1958-1964), and rules and regulations for campus parties (1940's and 1950's).

Delta Upsilon International Fraternity. Rochester Chapter

The collection includes chapter minutes (1911-1934) and six scrapbooks from the 1930s to the early 1950s, with a letter from Brother David Levy Reiner (Class of 2003) entrusting the scrapbooks on behalf of the chapter. The scrapbooks were compiled in part by Brother Robert Elwell (Class of 1950), and they contain pictures, clippings, and captions covering subjects such as class pictures, football and other sports, social events, pledging, and Delta Upsilon involvement at the University of Rochester.

This collection contains correspondence to and from Arthur Sullivan Gale, head of the Department of Mathematics. Most letters pertain to vacancies or the possibility of vacancies in the department and cover topics such as credentials, recommendations, interviews, and salaries for teaching positions. The collection also includes recommendation letters and application materials. Some applicants enclosed a photograph along with their application.

Department of Mathematics Papers contain correspondence and other files of Arthur Sullivan Gale, chairman of the Department of Mathematics and dean of the College for Men. Correspondence organized alphabetically by subject appears first, followed by chronological correspondence (1927-1943). Additional files relate to faculty candidates, committees, organizations, examinations, the department's Stoddard Prize, and other subjects. Stoddard Prize material includes problems and students' answers, by year. The collection also contains some photographs.

This collection contains applications for assistantships and some physics exams from the early 1940's. Includes a small amount of departmental correspondence, some of it from Dr. Lee A. DuBridge's position at Washington University before he came to the University of Rochester.

This collection is comprised of mostly photographs of the different stages of construction of the Eastman Theatre and images of some of the workers who helped build it. It also contains the Apprentice Card of Frank Whalen, timekeeper for the International Association of Bridge and Structural Iron Workers, Local Union No. 33 of Rochester, NY.

Material of Edwin Fauver, Professor of Hygiene and Physical Education, who was on the University of Rochester faculty from 1916-1945. Includes correspondence; annual reports, 1920-1944 (incomplete); and printed, mimeographed, and typescript material relating to athletics, health, and physical education, especially at the University.

This collection contains correspondence of the graduate manager of student activities of the College for Men about the University of Rochester's athletic teams' finances, staffing, and competitions; musical clubs' finances; and the creation of the University Press Club. The collection also includes some catalogs, pamphlets, and ephemera. Correspondence from 1919-1922 is mostly to or from E. Alcott Neary. Correspondence after 1922 is mostly to or from Hugh Smith. Some correspondence is to or from Edwin Fauver, the University's athletic director.

Hess, Helen Caroline, 1911-1990

This photograph album created by Helen C. Hess (Class of 1933) contains images of the University of Rochester's Prince Street Campus, River Campus, Memorial Art Gallery, and Commencement 1933. It also contains photographs of downtown Rochester and a fire on Lake Avenue in 1935. A number of images show Hess and friends on trips to parks and other sites in the surrounding area, including Conesus Lake, the Adirondacks (for a state geologic field trip), Durand Eastman Park, Ellison Park, Roseland on Canandaigua Lake, Niagara Falls, Hemlock Lake Park, Powder Mills Park, Hamlin Beach Park, and Letchworth Park.

The Henry C. Mills Vice President for Educational Administration Papers contain materials for the academic years 1958/1959 through 1963/1964. The collection is organized by year, and each year consists of three sections: staff folders, folders corresponding to schools and colleges at the University, and subject folders.

University of Rochester. Hopeman Memorial Carillon

Box 1 of the Hopeman Chimes and Carillon Papers contains material from various bellfoundries related to the purchase of the original chimes from 1926 to 1929. Boxes 2 and 3 deal mostly with the purchase, installation, and dedication ceremony for the carillon, while boxes 4-8 include information on the Bellman Society, the Guild of Carillonneurs in North America, and concerts, as well as objects, brochures, and audio recordings. Box 9 and Box 10 include ephemera and publications related to concerts performed on the Hopeman Memorial Carillon. Box 11 and Box 12 contain administrative material related to maintaining the carillon and planning concerts. The collection also contains oversize materials such as posters and signs.

Contains publications, correspondence, and other materials related to the development and formation of the Institute of Applied Optics. Publications include course bulletins and articles from other institutions in the early 1920s, optical journals, and Institute publicity. Topics of correspondence include hiring new faculty and the study of optometry at the Institute. Correspondents include President Rush Rhees, T. Russell Wilkins, and Edward Bausch. Some of this correspondence is contained in a binder that is labeled Optometry but also includes materials about other aspects of applied optics. Other materials include authorization forms requesting work from the optical shop signed by Brian O'Brien.

Evans, John Cushing, 1918-2008

The collection includes correspondence, photographs, and other materials relating to the Institute of Optics. Correspondence is mainly between Evans and University of Rochester President Dennis O'Brien and relates to papers written by President O'Brien. Photographs show Evans and optical equipment. Institute materials include lists of faculty and degrees. There is also information about the Industrial Associates Program, in which representatives from optics companies visit the Institute and meet with students and faculty.

DeJager, Donald, 1927-2008

The collection contains materials about the study of lens design at the Institute of Optics. These include papers written by Institute faculty members and course materials developed by Rudolf Kingslake. Also included is a Department of Defense publication about optical design. Most materials appear to be from the 1960s, though some are undated.

The Institute of Optics collection contains the following series: History, Photographs, Faculty/Staff, Publications and Publicity, the Industrial Associates Program, and Summer Course Brochures. Materials related to History include research and reports, anniversary celebration information, and correspondence about the development of the Institute. Subjects of Photographs include people, buildings, and research experiments. Among the material in the Faculty/Staff series are letters from alumni to Helen Tobin, the first secretary to the director of the Institute, celebrating her retirement. Publications and Publicity include annotated copies of newsletters, an article about Todd AO (a widescreen process for motion pictures) and Brian O'Brien, and pamphlets on graduate study at the Institute. Industrial Associates Program contents include two binders with planning material. Summer Course Brochures, which begin in 1962, contain information about the various continuing-education courses offered by the Institute.
