Penfield Library Archives and Special Collections Department is at the heart of teaching and learning at SUNY Oswego. The College Archives was established to preserve, maintain and foster an appreciation of the history and enduring value of SUNY Oswego. The Archives is comprised of historical records and documents of administrators, Departments, faculty, staff and students. Special Collections' local history collection includes material that focuses on the historical, political and cultural heritage of Oswego County or the surrounding Central New York region.

This collection mainly holds 35mm black and white photograph negatives of SUNY Oswego news and events occurring between 1996 and 2004 taken by James Russell in his role as Photographer for the Office of Communications and Marketing. These negatives are sometimes accompanied by contact sheets and documents that provide more information on the photographed events.

Babcock Family
The family papers consist primarily of surveying notes generated by, or collected by, various members of the Babcock and Foster families of Oswego County, New York. The bulk of material can be attributed to A.H. Foster, who surveyed Williamstown and Amboy between [1930 and 1870]. The collection also includes field notes, maps, deeds, and mortgages from various surveyors and residents of Oswego County.

Beyerbach, Barbara, 1953-
Collection contains materials collected and created by Barbara Beyerbach during her academic career at SUNY Oswego. Materials include photographs, two photograph albums, newspaper clippings, UMatic tape, books, journals, a vinyl banner, and personal papers.

Bowker Family
A majority of the correspondence reflects the personal and military activities of George Bowker and the 89th New York Infantry Regiment during the War of the Rebellion. The 89th fought in the Eastern theater of the war, and Bowker mentions the siege of Suffolk [April-May 1862] and the bombardment of Fort Sumter [August 1863]. Included in the collection are the letters of Clara Bowker dating from 1897 to 1898.

Brown, Foster S.
Under Foster Brown's leadership, the number of students and the physical campus greatly expanded. Brown’s administration saw the opening of Lakeside residence and dining halls, notable academic buildings and Lee Hall’s physical plant (to power the expanding campus) that all lay the foundation for even more growth to come. Brown led the way to the addition of robust liberal arts programs at Oswego to broaden beyond the initial (but still important) teacher preparation focus.

Brown, Leon Newell, 1890-1979
The collection consists of material dealing with the histories of fire making, the production of matches, match companies and biographies of their founders, and of the Diamond Match Company. The most important items held in the collection are Brown’s correspondence and notes regarding research on numerous American match companies from their early origins to the 1970’s.

Burt, Bradley Benedict, 1814-1898
The collection contains correspondence, financial and legal records, plus miscellaneous materials generated by the Burt and Noyes families. It includes genealogical records of both families and personal letters. The most significant letters are from William Curtis Noyes, a New York City attorney, and James Van Cleve, a Lake Ontario ship captain who discusses Champlain’s 1615 expedition against the Onondaga Indians and La Salle’s explorations in western and central New York.

Burt, Charles Franklin, 1850-1938
The collection consists of weekly letters, college diaries and miscellaneous ephemera from Charles F. Burt and his son C. Willard Burt. The more significant items within the collection are the weekly letters from Charles to his parents from DeWitt, Michigan (1870s), and the correspondence from C. Willard while he trained and served in the United States Army during the First World War (1917-1918).

Danenhower Family
The Danenhower collection contains a map of Jeannette Expedition, a chart of Melville’s Trace, and official documents of John Danenhower. Included in the collection are the papers of Sloan Danenhower, John’s son, which contain the minutes and constitution of Theta Pi fraternity of the United States Naval Academy.

Ebert, Thomas
Historian Thomas Ebert donated seven black and white images of officers from the 147th Regiment New York Volunteers. Officers include: Captain John McKinlock, Company A; First Lieutenant George Huginin, Company A; Captain Delos Gary, Company G; Second Lieutenant Volney J. Pierce, Company G; Major H.H. Lyman; Captain George Harney, Company B; Francis C. Miller.

Fillmore, Millard Powers, 1828-1889
The legal papers consist of court records, reports, and notes on the numerous cases which Powers Fillmore litigated between 1869 and the middle 1880’s. The legal records include documents relevant to the proceedings of the circuit, county, district, and State Supreme Courts of New York State. Earlier documented cases from the 1830’s and 1850’s are present within the collection.

First Presbyterian Church (Oswego, NY)
The First Presbyterian Church Records collection contains records, directories, scrapbooks, correspondences and bulletins mainly between two time periods, 1824 to 1916 and 1937 to 1985. The collection was compiled by Elizabeth Hallock and Marilyn Barach at different periods of time.

Gifford, William Bernard
The papers contain correspondence, business transactions, local documents and miscellaneous papers from both William and John Gifford. Documents of importance include, John Gifford’s letter describing the Revolutionary War. Also of interest are records of slave purchases in New York, and a petition for exchange of prisoners after the Battle of Monmouth [June 1778].

The Van Keuren Papers consist of 2 linear feet of notes, reports, correspondence, unpublished manuscripts, clippings, research articles, pamphlets and booklets; 1 linear foot of oral history tapes; and 8 linear feet of artifacts, mostly tourist type dolls, but also some more ceremonial masks and rattles.

Knitter, Grace
The collection contains correspondence, essays, and poetry of life in Oswego, New York, in the early 20th century. The most significant work in the collection are her memoirs of Oswego, where she mentions the many social activities, family life and numerous people she encountered while in Oswego. She discusses in detail the appearance of the Oswego Public Library and other structures in the city.

The collection contains correspondence, publications from local, state and national chapters, newspaper clippings, and miscellaneous other items of government programs in the region. The key documents are the organization’s minutes and correspondence, as well as the local chapter’s newsletter the “Valley Voter” (1966-1978).

Marshall, O. H. (Orsamus Holmes), 1813-1884
The Marshall family papers document to varying degrees of completeness the activity of five generations of Holmes, Marshall, DeAngelis and related families who settled early in central and western New York. The papers reveal primarily the internal workings of the family centered around Orsamus and Millicent Marshall: their attitudes and far-flung family relationships, their social position, the rearing of children and their growth, and the travels of and intellectual activities of family members. Other papers of interest are the records of the family legal firm, records and papers relating to the organizations and clubs in which members of the family played a part, and an eyewitness account of the Battle of Valcour Island on Lake Champlain, a naval battle of the War of 1812.

This collection was produced by the Minetto Elementary School during the bicentennial of the United States. It includes materials put together by students at the school for a class project. It contains the class projects, background articles, and interviews with elderly Minetto citizens.

This collection contains posters, fliers, memos, notes, postcards, and other paper advertisements distributed in Tyler Hall for events from 1964 to 1995. The majority of the advertising is for art exhibits, music concerts, and theatrical events. There is also material on fundraisers, educational opportunities, Oswego's open house events and parents weekends, Quest, and student organizations, among others.

Owens, Edward D.
This collection contains four yearbooks of Edward D. Owens, Class of 1937. The yearbooks are all titled The Ontarian and are between the years 1934 and 1937. There are handwritten notes on the pages of each yearbook from acquaintances of Edward. All four yearbooks are bound, and the 1937 edition has a green plastic comb binding. This collection may be of interest to researchers as Mr. Owens was a member of the Psi Phi fraternity at the Oswego Normal School and was active in other student groups.

Penfield, Joel
The diary contains a day to day representation of work performed in a dry goods store in Oswego in the early 19th century. It includes some discussions on daily activities and events in and around the village of Oswego. Mentions the cholera epidemic of 1832, the temperance movement, and his travels through central and northern New York (the most significant were his travels to Watertown and Sackett's Harbor.) A majority of the diary, however, focuses upon his participation in the Church.

Perry, Lulu S., 1881-
The Pennellville Diaries offer a daily account of the duties and activities associated with rural farm life in Oswego County. The diaries contain descriptions of everyday labors from both the male and female perspective, and the numerous special events which highlighted their year. The diaries include entries on produce prices, trips to various parts of the county and mentions the activities of Farmer’s Institute and the One Room School House.

Powell, Thomas F.
The collection contains Civil War letters and papers, material about the toll road from Watertown to Watertown Center, and miscellaneous legal and business papers from the Watertown, N.Y. area. The most significant piece of the collection are the Xeroxed copies of letters from Benny F. Murfitt, who was a sergeant in the 150th New York Volunteer Regiment during the Civil War. His recollections focus on the series of battles outside of Atlanta, Georgia.

Radley, Virginia L.
Professional collection of Dr. Virginia Radley, the eighth president of SUNY Oswego. Dr. Radley, the first woman president of a state-operated campus in the SUNY system, led the way to bolstering Oswego’s strong commitment to academic quality. She shepherded the establishment of the college’s Honors Program, Quest day of scholarly and creative activity and other endeavors that continue to provide depth and diversity to the Oswego experience.

Restuccia, Bettijoe E.
The collection consists of 24 letters received by Bettijoe E. Restuccia following the death of her husband in April of 1945. Many heart-felt letters following his death make up a majority of this collection, but the most significant correspondence lie with the eyewitness and government reports of his heroic deeds prior to his tragic death. The government correspondence includes a letter from the chaplain who said the rights over John.

Rice, Dr. Harvey M.
Professional collection of Dr. Harvey M. Rice, fifth President of SUNY Oswego from 1947 to 1952. In the postwar years, the administration of Harvey M. Rice kickstarted a period of ambitious yet sustained growth that also began to turn Oswego into a residential campus. Buildings opened during the Rice administration included our first residence halls (Lonis and Moreland) and student union (in what is now Mackin). Among other noteworthy accomplishments, under Rice’s presidency, Oswego became a founding member of the SUNY system in 1948.

Riggs, James G.
The James G. Riggs Papers collection contains materials collected by members of SUNY Oswego about the third principal of the Oswego Normal School from 1913 to 1933. During his tenure as principal James Riggs expanded the industrial arts program and opened Park Hall, added more land to the current college location, and guided the school through World War 1, the outbreak of Influenza Epidemic of 1919, and the onset of the Great Depression.

Save Our Shores (Organization)
The Save Our Shores papers contain correspondence, minutes of the group meetings, and petitions produced by the organization. The papers also include press releases, newspaper clippings, and pamphlets on the group's activities. These papers represent the significance of public interest groups in preserving their surroundings.

Snyder, Charles McCool
The stocks represented in this collection were sold to aid the Oswego River Starch Company of Battle Island, New York [1858], and the Oswego Hotel Corporation of Oswego County [1911]. The most significant part of this collection are the imprints of the Oswego River Starch Company in the 1850’s.

The Coye papers represent the numerous challenges and issues that arose in Oswego County, New York, prior to the American Civil War. The correspondence among friends and relatives across the United States and western territories reflect the many important events of the era. A few of the letters discuss the Gold Rush in Colorado and the hardships of frontier life in the Iowa territory. The main focus of the letters center upon school life in Oswego County during the middle 19th century. Mentions abolitionism in New York.

Papers of Dr. Mary Edwards Walker, an American abolitionist, prohibitionist, prisoner of war and surgeon. She is the only woman to ever receive the Medal of Honor. Papers consist largely of photocopies of journal articles and nineteenth & twentieth century newspaper clippings. Also included are photographs representing the life of Mary Edwards Walker, bank book, commemorative silver spoon, commemorative stamp and two personal letters.

Isaac B. Poucher, Sheldon's longtime lieutenant, carried on the founder's revolutionary direction as the second principal at Oswego Normal School from 1897 to 1913. He was associated with Oswego Normal School for 50 years. Poucher’s vision led to the construction of what is now Sheldon Hall and buying the land that brought us to the college’s current lakeside location. Graduates continued to carry the Oswego Method into the world and expanded the institution’s reputation and legacy.

The bonds represented in the collection were granted to aid the Oswego Midland Railroad Company, the Lake Shore Railroad Company, and the Syracuse, Phoenix, and Oswego Railroad Company. Numerous towns and cities participated in issuing these bonds including: Oswego, Richland, Sandy Creek, Schroeppel, Hannibal and Constantia. The most impressive part of this collection are the fine imprints of the bonds.

Anthony Slosek’s autobiography focuses upon Oswego, New York during the early part of the twentieth century. His work discusses in detail his early days in grammar school, high school, the Great Depression, prohibition, the trolley system, the introduction of the automobile, and other important events in Oswego’s history. Included are papers on Oswego’s East Side, early property grants and the history of transportation in Oswego.

The professional collection of James E. Perdue, the seventh President of SUNY Oswego and covers the years from 1963 to 1991. Dr. Perdue oversaw the ongoing physical transformation of the campus landscape and growth in its student and faculty ranks. He spearheaded the opening of the academic quad that includes Hewitt, Penfield Library and Lanigan, Mahar and Tyler Halls; several residence halls including what is known as “New Campus”; dining halls; the Culkin administration building and other spaces still of great use.

The papers reflect the varied and wide-ranging interests of Dr. Steinkraus. They include originals and copies of his prolific writings: essays, books, book chapters, editorials, letters to the editors, reports, correspondence, conference papers and speeches, and journal articles.

The diary consists of one bound diary. The more significant entries in the diary include, his daily activities as both a farmer and logger, his brief descriptions of the War of 1812, particularly the invasion of Fort Ontario (May 1814), and his travels to other parts of central New York.

Stowell, Shubal W.
The diary consists of transcripts of daily activities during Stowell's voyage west across the American continent. Mentions flooding in the Missouri River in the spring of 1850, the community of Great Salt Lake, and numerous other sites he encountered during his voyage. He also discusses his failure to "make it rich" and his return to Oswego by sea.

Weber, Stephen L.
Dr. Stephen L. Weber worked to enhance faculty development, foster diversity and intercultural competence, make the campus more self-sufficient, improve service to the community, and enrich the natural and cultural environment of the campus. Weber saw the continued expansion of student numbers and academic offerings -- spearheading the creation the School of Business and the current version of the School of Education in 1992 from the Division of Professional Studies.

Wood Family
The Wood family papers consist mainly of the legal and financial records of Ebenezer, Ephraim, and Amos W. Wood or Woodville, New York. Included are legal summonses, deeds, bonds, affadavits, land survey materials, accounts, and school records. Among the papers are Amos E. Wood's will and property records deeding his land to his six children; a letter by four different correspondence to Amos Wood while he was on a journey to Ohio in 1836; an 1818 contract for the construction of a schoolhouse, giving the location and dimensions and the amount paid to the carpenter, and a printed proclamation from President Van Buren not to participate in hostilities arising in Canada [1838].
