Papers of Wardwell. These papers chiefly concern the 1917-1918 American Red Cross Mission to Russia, in which Wardwell served, and his involvement in efforts to support trade with and aid to Russia in 1919-1924; he was chairman of the Russian Famine Fund in that period. There are a few items concerning the 1941 W.A. Harriman-Lord Beaverbrook mission to Russia, in which Wardwell participated. Materials on the Red Cross Mission are chiefly from May-October 1918, when Wardwell commanded it; they consist of correspondence, reports, documents, many photographs, and transcribed excerpts from Wardwell's diary and letters home. Major correspondents include Georgiĭ Chicherin, Lev Trot︠s︡kiĭ, and Raymond Robins. Records of Wardwell's efforts in regard to Russia in 1919-1924 consist of extensive correspondence files with prominent Americans, such as Robins and Herbert Hoover, manuscripts, related printed materials, and Wardwell's diary of his trip to Russia in the fall of 1922.

Photographs of various people and on various topics. There are a number of major groups: late 19th century Russian revolutionaries; the wreck of Alexander III's train in 1888; Russian families in the early 20th century; nurses in Petrograd in World War I (Kononova); Aleksandr Kerenskiĭ at the front, 1917; St. Tikhon's Monastery in Pennsylvania; and American cultural and political figures in the USSR in the 1950's (such as Van Cliburn, W.A. Harriman, Richard Nixon, Carl Sandburg, and Isaac Stern).

Correspondence, manuscripts, memorabilia, photographs, phonograph and tape recordings, and printed files. Included are Cerf's personal correspondence files, 1929-1945, and the diaries and scrapbooks which he maintained from his school days throughout his active career. The diaries, in date-book format, contain terse notes on Cerf's meetings with authors and friends, on his travels and publishing activities; the scrapbooks contain correspondence and photographs, as well as memorabilia and printed items, and were annotated by Cerf and his wife, Phyllis Fraser Cerf Wagner. Also in the collection are manuscripts and proofs for Cerf's books including "The Laugh's on Me""Treasury of Atrocious Puns""The Sound of Laughter""Stories to Make You Feel Better", and "At Random: the Reminiscences of Bennett Cerf", which was edited by Phyllis Cerf Wagner and Albert Erskine, 1977. The papers also include condolence letters written at the time of Cerf's death, photographs and photo albums,certificates and awards, and miscellaneous printed material, including Random House and Modern Library catalogues. The Ferenc Nagy Papers consist of correspondence, manuscripts, subject files and printed materials relating to Nagy's career and family. The earliest materials cover the period 1945 to 1947 when Nagy was leader of the Hungarian Smallholders' Party, and later Prime Minister of Hungary.

Papers of Smedley, including correspondence, memoranda, manuscripts, and printed materials about the United Nations, national politics and elections, and civic organizations in New York City and in Connecticut. Correspondents include Hubert Humphrey, John F. Kennedy, and Bertrand Russell.

Correspondence, manuscripts, documents, notebooks, memorabilia, a tape cassette, photographs, and printed materials. The collection is primarily correspondence files, both personal and professional, along with book reviews, awards and diplomas, letters of condolence on his death, clippings, and correspondence, manuscripts and printed materials relating to THE STREAM OF HISTORY. The correspondence relates specifically to the third edition. The manuscripts are typed and holograph inserts for the third edition and possibly for the second edition as well. Among the manuscripts are twenty-two notebooks containing holograph notes and drafts of chapters. The printed material consists of one copy of THE STREAM OF HISTORY, 1934 edition.

Correspondence, manuscripts, notes, documents, subject files, photographs, art works, and printed materials. This collection covers the entire span of his life, although by far the greatest part relates to his activities as a professor from the 1930s to the 1960s. Among the correspondents are many important figures in American Russian studies or Columbia University; there are also many letters from his wife, Clemens T. Robinson, and Lewis Mumford. Manuscripts by Robinson include his "Rural Russia under the Old Regime" lectures, notes, speeches and essays, and also miscellaneous pieces (essays, reviews, poems, stories, plays, etc.) that he wrote while he was an aspiring young journalist and writer in the 1910s and 1920s. Manuscripts by others consist of student theses, papers, books and reports that were given him for review or comment. Subject files deal with such topics as his service in World War I; Columbia University (especially the Libraries and the History Department); and various aspects of academic life and Russian studies. Almost nothing in the collection has any bearing on his government service during World War II; items from the war years concern personal affairs or scholarship. There are photographs of Robinson and his wife; family photographs from the late 19th and early 20th centuries; and Russian scenes. Art works include items by Clemens T. Robinson. Among the printed materials are two books inscribed by Mumford to Robinson.

Correspondence, memoranda, position papers, campaign materials, speeches, photographs, and printed materials relating primarily to Samuels' unsuccessful 1970 campaign for governor of New York. Included with the collection are campaign materials for other candidates, and campaign buttons for Samuels, Nelson A. Rockefeller, and others. Major correspondents include William Averell Harriman, Hubert Horatio Humphrey, LeRoi Jones, Edward I. Koch, John V. Lindsay, Robert Moses, and Edmund S. Muskie.
