Dr. Joseph Janvier Woodward
Scope and content: Examination notes taken by Dr. Robert King Stone, family physician of President Abraham Lincoln, after Lincoln was shot by John Wilkes Booth on April 14, 1865. Includes autopsy notes of J.J. (Joseph Janvier) Woodward, another physician who examined Lincoln. Additionally, there is an 1864 sheet containing autographs of Lincoln and his cabinet (William H. Seward, Salmon Chase, Edwin M. Stanton, Gideon Welles, J.P. Usher, M. Blair, and Edward Bates).

Kohlhofer, Adolf J.

Field notebook for RPI's Junior Class Hydrographic and Topographic Survey, kept by Adolph Kohlhofer, Class of 1912. The notebook includes sketches of surveys, tide gage readings, level notes, notes on the Hudson River, various computations, and related information. Kohlhofer also listed the surnames of other students who worked on both surveys with him.

Powell, Ambrose V.

Ambrose V. Powell's (RPI Class of 1868) diary, dated 1865. Powell describes his college experience as a student at Rensselaer, and writes about news of the Civil War. The most noteworthy diary entries describe Powell's reaction to President Lincoln's assassination, how the city of Troy mourned the passing of the President, as well as mentioning his visit to Albany to view President Lincoln's casket.

This collection covers the entirety of American Can Company’s years of business, from 1901-1989, with a large number of photos (many duplicates of the same company distributed photos). It also includes personal reference books of former employees, publications distributed by the company, and tools of the trade. Blueprints, correspondence, articles, and photographs make up the bulk of the collection.

The workbook that comprises this collection was used during the Amos Parrish Fashion Merchandising Clinic, held in New York City, January 6-10, 1930. The clinic was offered once and at times twice annually from the 1920s through 1955 to forecast the year's fashion industry trends. This workbook belonged to Howard Phillips, merchandise manager for Ernst Kern Department Store, Detroit, Michigan, and was annotated by Phillips.

Cary, Edward Richard

RPI Professor Edward R. Cary's "A Short Lecture Course on the Construction of Diagrams for The Div. B - C.E. Students at R.P.I." Cary was RPI Professor of Surveying and Railroad Engineering, and his typescript lists the kinds of diagrams presented in the course, such as comparison and conversion diagrams, alignment diagrams, and logarithmic diagrams.

Letter, 9 October 1929, from Barney Bluestone to Major B. L. Fields, concerning the 1850 U.S. "Liberty Cap" silver coin which he was sent to P. James Clarke of Jameston, NY; U.S. pattern coins sent to Fields on approval for his puchase; and information on purchasing the book United States Pattern, Trial, and Experimental Pieces; Being a List of the Pattern, Trial and Experimental Pieces Which have been Issued by the United States Mint from 1792 up to the Present Time by Edgar H. Adams and William H. Woodin. The letter is on Barney Bluestone letterhead.

Curtiss, Charles D.

This student notebook, kept by Charles D. Curtiss, Rensselaer Class of 1855, contains lectures in spherical trigonometry, compass surveying, and notes on Curtiss' investigation of logarithms. This notebook also includes financial accounts of the Potsdam Watertown Railroad in 1853, and notes regarding RPI's 1853, 1854, and 1855 commencements.

This collection focuses on the family of Beverly Chew, president of Shuron Optical. He resided at 543 South Main Street from the 1920s through 1960 when he and his wife Edith gifted the building to the Geneva Historical Society as a permanent home for the Geneva History Museum.

Ledger from a Union prison in Alexandria, Virginia, that documents the transgressions of Union soldiers. Includes prisoners' name, regiment, company, charges, charging official, and remarks. Includes prisoners from the following regiments: 5 NY, 16 NY, 109 NY, 28 MA, Colored, 11 US, 44 NY, 3 MD, 112PA, 15 CT, and many others.

This collection consists of two sets of lantern slides of images of early maps of the Rochester area. A few slides show political cartoons and photographs of early Rochester. The origin of this collection and the date of its creation is unknown, but some of the maps and images contained therein may be unique.

This collection consists of an introductory booklet to Benedict J. Fernandez's portfolio of photographs of Martin Luther King, Jr., taken in the last year of King's life, Countdown to Eternity: Photographs of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. in the 1960's. Fernandez was founder of the photography program at Parsons School of Design, serving as chair from 1981-1994.

This item, from the U.S. Naval Station in New Orleans, Louisiana, was designed under specification of the Bureau of Yards and Docks, Navy Dept. It was constructed under the direction of Rear Admiral Mordecai T. Endicott (RPI Class of 1868, U.S.N. Chief of Bureau of Yards and Docks) and tested under the supervision of Civil Engineer A.C. Cunningham, U.S.N. (RPI Class of 1885).

The Fanny Farmer candy company operated in Rochester, New York from 1919 to 1967. This collection consists of a First Edition candy box illustrated with Beatrix Potter-named rabbits with Easter eggs on sides, rabbit in watering can on front. The illustrations are not Beatrix Potter but in a distinct 1950s style. Produced by Fanny Farmer Studios.

This collection contains photographs, catalogs, advertisements and articles from various publications. Also included is correspondence conducted between the Geneva Historical Society and others from the 1960s-2000s, mostly with Eleanor Clise, GHS Archivist. Most Fay & Bowen material comes from after the company moved from Auburn, 1904, until it closed in 1929; a couple of catalogs or copies are included from pre-1904. Also included are FayBow materials from the early 1930s.

Cook, George Hammell, 1818-1889

Bound volume labeled "Manuscript Catalog of Library and Inventory of Apparatus in the Handwriting of Dr. George H. Cook and Prepared by him when Director - Presented by his son Paul Cook in 1890 to Library of R.P.I." The volume is divided into three sections: Catalog of Books in the Library of the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, including columns for the number of volumes, original cost, and the then current value of each book; Mathematical and Philosophical Apparatus, including original cost and then current value; and Memorial Services for George Hammell Cook from the Rutgers Targum, circa 1889.

Seventeen color printed pages showing the text and artifacts in the George M. Low Gallery in the Jonsson Engineering Center at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. Includes three photographs showing Astronaut John Swigert Jr., with accompanying biographical information, and an image of Kevin Bacon, who played John Swigert in the movie "Apollo 13," which was released in 1995.

The collection covers 1881-1924, though Haviland dies in 1921 some materials were kept together despite not being related. Staff may decide to split these materials up later on.

The Historical Society possesses quite a few pieces of Hotel Seneca that have been left behind including menus, wine lists, pamphlets, a napkin, and even pieces of wallpaper. There is not much material from the days of the Nester Hotel but rather the time period during which the building was Hotel Seneca, 1912-1982.

This collection, which dates from 1740-2004, includes dozens of hand drawn maps, and maps with engravings, most of them originals, as well as bound atlases, representing the City of Hudson and its immediate surrounding area, including Columbia County and portions of adjacent counties as well as New York State. These items contain important information about the history of Hudson and the surrounding region – from insurance and railroad maps, topographical and geological maps, to bird’s eye view drawings and developmental proposals. The collection also includes maps that provide information about The Hudson River as a site of commerce, industry, travel, and tourism, as well as wildlife and residential life, since the settling of the city of Hudson. The collection features maps and bound atlases from a multitude of important historic publishers, including Beers, Ellis & Co.; H.H. Rowley & Co; F.W. Beers; Hudson River Sloop Clearwater; The Sanborn Map Company; and Frank E. Richards, among others.

This volume appears to be John W. Stebbins' personal scrapbook of Odd Fellows activities. Includes articles about Stebbins' election to the post of Grand Sire, the highest position in the Odd Fellows organization. The content of the scrapbook dates between 1870 and 1892.

This student notebook is from the first computer class taught at RPI, in the Spring of 1957. It was a combined analog and digital computing course taught by Professor Nash of the Math Department. The notebook was kept by Jacob Abel, RPI Class of 1957. Contained in the notebook are homework problems and equations on a variety of topics, including cross fields, trigonometry, applied physics, and information on digital computers.

This item is a student notebook of John A. Ubsdell, RPI Class of 1889. The notebook was titled, "Notes on Adjustment and Use of Instruments," after a course given by David M. Greene, who was a Director and Academic Head of Rensselaer. Topics in the notebook include scientific instrument use, mathematic formulas and equations, level measurements, and figure drawings of how to use certain instruments, such as transits.
