Black, Algernon D. (Algernon David), 1900-1993

Correspondence, speeches, memoranda, minutes, and publications, including radio talks and platform addresses given at the Society, the papers of several housing committees on which Black served, and autobiographical subject files compiled by Black and documenting his participation in many organizations and social causes.

Vogel, Amos
This collection documents the professional work of film critic, professor, and author, Amos Vogel. The bulk of the records are concerned with numerous films that Vogel has screened for Cinema 16, the independent film society that he founded and directed for sixteen years, as well as administrative records, correspondence, photographs, and printed material.

Stolberg, Benjamin, 1891-1951

Papers of Stolberg include correspondence files, notes and manuscripts of his writings, and files of clippings and periodicals in which his articles appeared. His writings deal with the labor movement, economics, the Socialist Party, and other liberal causes of the period between the wars. The extensive correspondence in the collection includes letters from Lewis Corey, Herbert Hoover, Sinclair Lewis, H.L. Mencken, Ayn Rand, Norman Thomas, and Leon Trotsky.

Hayes, Carlton J. H (Carlton Joseph Huntley), 1882-1964

Manuscripts, notes, lecture materials, and papers of Hayes. There are six boxes of correspondence, notes, and documents relating to the war years, 1942-1945, when Prof. Hayes served as Ambassador to Spain. The collection also includes the notes, drafts, and typescripts of Prof. Hayes' publications including his books Wartime Mission in Spain, 1942-1945 (New York, 1945), History of Europe (New York, 1956), A Political and Cultural History of Modern Europe (New York, 1932-1936), Generation of Materialism (New York, 1941), Christanity and Western Civilization (Stanford, 1954), and Contemporary Europe Since 1970 (New York, 1958). There are also notes and typescripts of an "Autobiography," which is apparently unpublished. Included in the collection are two boxes of catalogued correspondence.

Stelzle, Charles, 1869-1941

Papers of Reverend Stelzle, containing correspondence, manuscripts of his books and articles, photographs, pamphlets, and clippings relating to various sociological and religious subjects. Included among the manuscripts is a typescript copy of his AUTOBIOGRAPHY and approximately thirty-five surveys of religious and social agencies and institutions.

Gumby, L. S. Alexander, 1885-1961

A collection concerned with the various phases of black life in America, containing clippings, pamphlets, photographs, pictures, extracts from periodicals, and a representative group of approximately 350 letters, signatures, manuscripts, and documents. Among the letters are several each from Countee Cullen, Frederick Douglass, Alexander Dumas, fils, William Lloyd Garrison, Claude McKay, Abraham Lincoln, Henry Mencken, William Pickens, Albert A. Smith, and Booker T. Washington. Also, eighteen slavery documents.

Norman, Dorothy, 1905-1997

Correspondence, reports, pamphlets, and clippings of Norman. Among the subjects represented are health, population control, civil liberties, refugees, exiled governments and peoples of World War II, United Nations, education, delinquency, race relations, emerging nationalities, censorship, and foreign aid. Much of the correspondence in the collection centers around Mrs. Norman's column in THE NEW YORK POST in the 1940s. Organizations in the collection include Civil Liberties Union, Americans for Democratic Action, American Citizens Committee for Economic Aid Abroad, Women's City Club, American Emergency Food Committee for India, Urban League, Liberal Party, Citizens Union, Free Germany Movement, Free China Movement, and United World Federation. Also included are correspondence, manuscripts, research materials, and printed materials dealing with Norman's research and writing on India. There are two working manuscripts, one on India, the other on Nehru. Also, a fragmentary manuscript of her memoirs and the beginnings of a study of Alfred Stieglitz.

Lundberg, Emma O (Emma Octavia)
This collection contains research files, speeches, writings and other material related to Emma O. Lundberg, a child welfare leader who served the Wisconsin Industrial Commission, the United States Children's Bureau, the Child Welfare League of America, and the New York Temporary Emergency Relief Administration. Throughout her nearly forty-year career in social work, Lundberg wrote extensively about child welfare; most of the papers relate to her writings and research.

Materials relate to their work teaching as well as researching the Northside Center for Child Development and mid-twentieth century issues of youth and race in New York City.
