Kirkup, Seymour Stocker, 1788-1880

Letters of Seymour Stocker Kirkup (1788-1880), English artist and friend of William Blake, Walter Savage Landor, the Brownings, and Edward Trelawny. The largest group of correspondence consists of letters written by Kirkup to Frances Capper Brooke (1810-1886), author and book collector. In them Kirkup writes about his life in Florence, where he spent most of his adult years, Lord Vernon's edition of Dante which Kirkup was illustrating, his discovery of a fresco portrait of Dante, and politics. Also included are a series of letters written to Kirkup by Henry Edward Napier (1789-1853), brother of Sir Charles James Napier, British general and conqueror of Sind. Kirkup's essay concerning Dante is also in the Papers.
