New School for Social Research (New York, N.Y. : 1919-1997)
The Schools of Public Engagement was formed in 2011 with the reorganization of the New School for General Studies. As of 2016, the division consisted of: the Bachelor's Program for Adults and Transfer Students (BPATS); the School of Languages; the School of Media Studies; the Milano School of International Affairs, Management, and Urban Policy; and the Creative Writing Program. The collection also holds the 1991-2008 records of the World Policy Institute. Dating largely from the 1990s until 2014, these records contain correspondence, memoranda, reports, budget and financial material, and faculty and personnel files relating to the administration and governance of the Schools of Public Engagement and their predecessor programs, departments, and schools. This collection consists of records created and received by Parsons School of Design Presidents Sterling A. Callisen (president 1959-1963) and Francis A. Ruzicka (president 1963-1969), and records of the Parsons Academic Dean's Office and Business Manager from the 1950s-1960s. The Parsons School of Design Master of Arts Design Studies program was established to encourage the study of design as a transdisciplinary discipline with the goal of preparing students to become active agents of social change. The collection consists of physical and electronic files documenting the program's development and planning, and reporting on its progress, as well as syllabi and video recordings of a 2014 symposium.

This collection largely documents the activities of the New School Publicity Office during the 1940s and 1950s, and reflects the range of activities of the department under the leadership of Agnes De Lima, who directed the department for two decades. The collection includes notes and draft materials for the production of press releases, articles in the weekly New School Bulletin, advertisements and course promotion, and administrative materials. Also includes materials related to the organization of art exhibitions and special events, and transcripts of radio announcements and speeches. The Dramatic Workshop, École Libre des Hautes Études and Graduate Faculty series in this collection are especially rich in describing the work of these important New School programs.

The New School Online records document the university's office devoted to developing and supporting online education. The files in this record group cover the second year of its existence as the Distance Instruction for Adult Learning (DIAL) program through 2008. The unit has also been called Distance Learning and is known as Global and Distributed Education as of 2017.

The records pertain to the oversight of The New School's libraries, which have undergone various name changes over time. Separate record groups document individual New School libraries: the Raymond E. Fogelman Library records (NS.08.01.01) and the Adam and Sophie Gimbel Design Library records (PC.08.01.01).

The collection consists of records originating from the office of Mary Urban, who coordinated fundraising and public relations efforts at the New School in the 1940s and early 1950s, and that of her successor, Margarete Westmann, director of Development from 1958-1962. Materials include memoranda and correspondence, financial statements, budgets, advertising contracts, donor and prospect records, and New School Associates membership records. Also includes event planning materials and invitations, fundraising appeals, minutes, reports, promotional materials, and records documenting the work of the Scholarship Committee and the Graduate Faculty Alumni Association. The New School Associates was the first fundraising body associated with the New School for Social Research. Composed of faculty, former students, school administrators and supporters of the school's aims, the Associates sponsored numerous events and an annual membership drive. These records represent the administration of the Associates from the mid-1940s through the 1970s. Art exhibition records extend into the 1980s.

Austill, Allen
These records were created by the dean's office of the adult education division of The New School (as of 2022, Schools of Public Engagement), and predominantly reflect the activities of two deans, William Birenbaum and Allen Austill, 1961-1979. A subset of records document the formation of New School College in the 1960s, the Institute for Retired Professionals, and the Physicians Assistant program. A number of files are restricted due to confidentiality.
