Fred Smith's interest in conservation, outdoor recreation, and the environment predate his association with Laurance Rockefeller. Yet because of this interest and Mr. Smith's talent in public relations and politics, he often acted as Mr. Rockefeller's representative, and his involvement in numerous commissions, committees, conferences, and organizations is documented throughout these files.

The years represented in these files saw an increasing emphasis on environmental concerns in the United States – water pollution, air pollution, the disposal of solid waste, recycling, clean energy, and the need to consciously plan for beauty in the environment – areas in which Laurance Rockefeller was intensely interested. Two of the series in this collection – Citizens Advisory Committee on Environmental Quality (CACEQ) and Utilities – deal extensively with these concerns. Additionally, the Fred Smith series contains numerous publications, reports, and speeches on environmental issues either written or delivered by Fred Smith.

The Correspondence Files collection of Laurance S. Rockefeller's papers, is comprised of alphabetical correspondence files for 1962-1991 from the LSR papers in the Rockefeller Family general files (record groups 3, 33, 37, and 39; and of LSR's files for individuals (Friends and Associates), pulled from these same general files. Sets of mail logs and chronological files, maintained by LSR's office from the early 1960s/early 1970s to around 1986, and two albums of "special letters" complete the collection.

This collection documents the creation, implementation, and general activities of the Outdoor Recreation Resources Review Commission from 1949-1964 with the bulk of the material dated between 1958 and 1963. The collection consists primarily of background material relating to members of the Outdoor Recreation Resources Review Commission, as well as correspondence between Laurance Rockefeller and his advisors, reports, studies, and speeches given by Laurance Rockefeller and others.
