The material also includes a wide variety of individual portraits and informal and candid shots of David Rockefeller, as well as individual and group portraits of his immediate family and relatives. The holdings also include a vast collection of David Rockefeller's travel as well as photographs of David with many business and political dignitaries and heads of state.

These records document Warren T. Lindquist's tenure as associate to David Rockefeller, from 1951 to 1977. He was particularly involved in Mr. Rockefeller's real estate investments and efforts to improve urban housing opportunities during the mid-twentieth century. Mr. Lindquist also served as Mr. Rockefeller's proxy with organizations focused on urban development in New York City and throughout the country, as reflected in the folders on the Downtown-Lower Manhattan Association, the Embarcadero Center, Morningside Heights Inc., the Pacific Air Commerce Center, and Westbay Associates. Additionally, there are extensive files on Fazenda Bodoquena, a large cattle ranch in Brazil in which Mr. Rockefeller purchased an interest in 1962.

The albums in this collection primarily contain images of David Rockefeller (DR) with his family, friends, personal office staff, or Chase Manhattan Bank colleagues during his travels throughout the globe. A second common album theme is DR with Peggy, his wife, at one of their homes: Hudson Pines in Pocantico Hills, New York; their townhouse on East 65th Street in Manhattan; Ringing Point in Seal Harbor, Maine; or Colombier, on St. Bart's, in the Caribbean. However, there are also hundreds of images from DR's childhood and from his service in Europe during World War II.

David Rockefeller's staff at Chase Manhattan Bank maintained a 5-foot-wide card index of business, personal, civic, and philanthropic contacts, and a set of this card file was shared with, and further maintained by, the Rockefeller family office staff at Room 5600 in Rockefeller Center. David Rockefeller's network of contacts was estimated at 100,000 names documented across 200,000 cards.

The collection documents all aspects of the Downtown-Lower Manhattan Association's activities from its creation, with the consolidation of the Downtown Manhattan Association and the Committee on Lower Manhattan in 1958, through its most active and successful years of 1958-1974, through the mid-1990s with its participation in the Lower Manhattan Project and its resulting updated Lower Manhattan Plan, and the role played by the DLMA as the supporting organization for Lower Manhattan's Business Improvement District (BID), the Alliance for Downtown New York. The material encompasses the meeting records of the Board of Directors, Members, Executive Committee, Planning Committee, and other prominent committees, a limited selection of officers files, financial records, membership records, projects, DLMA publications, and reports and studies.

Rockefeller, John D. (John Davison) (1839-1937)

This series reflects primarily the activities of John D. Rockefeller, Jr., but significant documentation on the political and civic concerns of each of his sons is also present. In addition to extensive files on family support of the Republican Party on the national, state, and local level, separate folders exist on specific candidates, such as President Dwight D. Eisenhower, New York City Mayor Fiorello La Guardia, and New York Governor Thomas Dewey. There are substantial files on family support for Nelson Rockefeller during his first gubernatorial campaign and immediately afterward. However, very little material exists in this series on his presidential effort in 1960.

The Cultural Interests series reflects the Rockefeller family's involvement and contributions in the areas of the arts, museums, parks, and historic restorations. The series contains correspondence between members of the Rockefeller family and the Family Office Staff on the one hand, and officials and members of the various institutions and organizations on the other. Most of the material concerns unsolicited appeals for donations. Some members of the family were also members of or were active in several of the organizations, and some of the correspondence reflects this activity.

The Housing Files comprise 8 cubic feet of material covering the years 1896-1962. The bulk of the material relates to John D. Rockefeller, Jr.'s activities in the housing field during the 1920s and 1930s. However, there are significant sections which detail the interests of Mr. Rockefeller, Sr. in Cleveland and New York City, and David Rockefeller in the Morningside Heights project. A few scattered files cover the activities of Messrs. John, Nelson, and Laurance Rockefeller in this field. Substantively, these files deal with Mr. Rockefeller, Jr.'s involvement with housing reform and housing projects during two distinct time periods: the period of great optimism and activity during the 1920s, and the period of destabilization and disengagement from the field after the coming of the New Deal and into the 1940s.

The files contain correspondence between members of the family and the family office, as well as officials and members of the various religious institutions. In some cases, the files include financial information on the appealing institutions. The miscellaneous files generally contain unsolicited appeals for donations. The series illustrates family contributions to religious organizations up to 1962. The contributions were made to a wide spectrum of organizations and activities, such as missionary movements, interdenominational cooperation, and religious education.

The World Affairs series reflects the Rockefeller family's contributions toward national defense and international relations. The series is divided into seven sections: Foreign Policy, including the Foreign Policy Association and the Council on Foreign Relations; Institute of Pacific Relations; National Defense, which includes material on war preparedness, veteran's organizations, civil defense, the Commander Byrd expeditions and the New York City Airport Authority; Post-War Reconstruction; Peace Plans, which contains material on peace organizations, the League of Nations and the United Nations (including material on John D. Rockefeller, Jr.'s gift of the site for the United Nations headquarters); War Relief; and National War Fund.

Bragazzi, Olive

As David Rockefeller's first curator, Olive Bragazzi organized and described his ever-evolving art collection. Starting in the 1970s, Ms. Bragazzi conducted extensive research on the artists in Mr. Rockefeller's European art and Western hemisphere collections, which served as the basis for Volumes I and II of the five-volume David and Peggy Rockefeller Art Collection catalogue. These files contain Ms. Bragazzi's notes on individual artists, as well as general files on the development of Volumes I and II.

The majority of this collection concerns Berent Friele's professional involvement in bettering relations between the United States and Brazil as an advisor on Latin America to Nelson A. Rockefeller during his tenure as governor of New York and later as U.S. Vice President. The collection also documents some of Friele's activities pertaining to or on behalf of David Rockefeller, focusing primarily on Latin America.

The Public Relations Department papers document the general activities and public opinion of the Rockefeller family during the years 1946-1961. Nelson, Winthrop, Laurance, David, and JDR 3rd are mentioned most frequently throughout the collection. The collection is primarily made up of correspondence between Rockefeller brothers and various public relations employees, studies, administrative files, articles and clippings. A large amount of material relates to Nelson's foreign aid projects in Venezuela and Brazil, specifically the American International Association for Economic and Social Development (AIA) (Series 1) and the International Basic Economy Corporation (IBEC) (Series 2). Nelson's political campaigns are documented heavily as well (see Series 6, Politics, 1941-1960).
