The Caulkins Family Papers consists of three series: Caulkins Family Papers and Photographs, 1810-1931; Edward Dana Caulkins, 1896-1974; and Recreation, 1923-1974. The first series includes materials that chronicle the growth of the Caulkins family. There is genealogical information compiled by E. Dana Caulkins, family photographs, Daniel Douglas Caulkins's writing and financial documents, correspondence between family members, and T. Vassar Caulkins's sermons from 1884-1938 as well as a scrapbook documenting his tenure as the minister at the First Baptist Church. The second series includes materials from E. Dana Caulkins's education at Suffield Academy, the University of Rochester and Columbia University. The series also consists of correspondence Caulkins wrote to his future wife, Ruth Smallwood, as well as to family members. This series documents Caulkins's early career working for municipal recreation organizations, speeches and articles from 1916-1945. The third series documents the development of recreation and its importance to young adult and adult health, both in the United States and internationally. Included in this series are alphabetized organizational files, with materials from the American Park and Recreation Association and other organizations, as well as subject files, with materials related to recreation in specific states and cities. Also included are printed materials and newspaper clippings related to recreation.
Correspondence, sermons, Hebrew-English lexicon, research notes, scrapbooks of clippings, letters copied into journals by Emilie Grace Briggs, books, pamphlets, Bibles, University of Virginia papers, University of Berlin papers, Union Theological Seminary papers, material relating to the Presbyterian Church, articles and miscellaneous. Also included is heresy material relating to Briggs' trial before the Presbytery of New York, 1892, and record of trial proceedings.
The papers of David Rhys Williams contain correspondence, manuscript sermon notes, speeches, prayers, meditations and tributes, newspaper clippings, church bulletins, church membership and mailing lists, Forum material, church publications, articles by David Rhys Williams appearing in journals such as The Christian Register, Unity, The Churchman, Advance, The Christian Leader etc., printed and manuscript material on his three published books, a few books from his personal library and a composite list of books contained in his library (since dispersed), a few portraits, photographs and sketches, documents and memorabilia, a tape recording of his tribute to Albert Einstein and over fifteen hundred numbered sermons with cross references to other related sermons - all relating to his career as a Congregational and Unitarian Minister. Some of his correspondents were John Haynes Holmes, Frederick May Eliot, Steven Fritchman, Frank Gannett, the Beacon Press, Corlias Lamont, Kenneth B. Keating and Justin Wroe Nixon, and Philip S. Bernstein.
The material is in a small but clear 18th-century hand.
This collection includes nine letters of Ralph Waldo Emerson as well as letters of Louis Agassiz, Amos Bronson Alcott, Oliver Wendell Holmes, Sr., Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, James Russell Lowell, John Lothrop Motley, Charles Sumner, and John Greenleaf Whittier. In addition, there are two incomplete manuscripts by Emerson and one document from the Liverpool Custom-house signed by Nathaniel Hawthorne as Consul for the United States. The collection also includes the corrected typescript, index, and page and galley proofs for Thomas Franklin Currier, A BIBLIOGRAPHY OF OLIVER WENDELL HOLMES (New York, 1953) which was edited by Professor Tilton. Also, some early correspondence and photographs of the Tilton family and friends. There are letters from the actors Annie Louise Ames, Richard J. Dillon, and Hans L. Meery to Tilton's grandfather, Bernard Paul Verne, as well as photographs, tintypes, and daguerreotypes of the Verne family and friends.
