Hamlin, A. D. F. (Alfred Dwight Foster), 1855-1926

Architectural drawings for buildings designed by Hamlin including proposed alterations for the Charles Dudley Warner House, circa 1885; pumping station Clear Stream (or Clear Stream Station), Long Island, 1886; American Classical School, Athens, Greece, 1886-1888; proposed cottage for Mrs. R. Hoe at Sea Cliff, Long Island, 1887; an addition to Clinton Hall at Blair Presbyterian Academy, Blairstown, New Jersey, circa 1896; Soldier's Monument, Whitinsville, Massachusetts, circa 1904 (Hamlin was the architect and Herman A. MacNeil was the sculptor); and miscellaneous and unidentified structures. Also included are drawings done by Hamlin while a student at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, 1876-1877; sketches done by Hamlin on travels both in the United States and abroad, 1867-1923; photographs of various unidentified buildings and architectural drawings; manuscripts of "ARCHITECTURAL SHADES AND SHADOWS" with related drawings"History of American Art" (unfinished, in French), circa 1923, and "MODERN ARCHITECTURE AND THE CRITICS" circa 1923. Personal materials included undated photographs of A.D.F. Hamlin; a photograph of an 1835 portrait of Cyrus Hamlin; a volume containing condolences, 1926, on the occasion of A.D.F. Hamlin's death; and a scrapbook"Memoirs of Amherst, Class of '75" containing programs, invitations, clippings, notes, essays, exam questions, steamship passenger lists, and other materials.

Detwiller, C. H (Charles H.)

This small collection contains primarily Detwiller's student drawings, notes, course materials, books, class photographs, and graduation announcements from the period of his study at Columbia University from 1881 to 1885. These materials are supplemented by a small group of Detwiller's childhood sketchbooks, drawings and office papers created by Detwiller during his practice as a professional architect, and other scrapbooks and ephemeral items relating to Detwiller's family and personal interests, spanning the years 1874 to 1940.

Hine, Lewis Wickes, 1874-1940

This collection contains reprographic architectural drawings for the Empire State Building; photographs of the demolition of the original Waldorf-Astoria Hotel, which occupied the Fifth Avenue site; photographs of the Empire State Building under construction, circa 1930-1931 (one photograph shows former governor Alfred E. Smith standing in the building during construction), including 232 photographs by photographer Lewis Hine; photographs showing the building after completion, circa 1931-1956; scrapbooks of clippings of articles about the building, 1930-1957; and illustrations of the Empire State Building, circa 1930s-1960s. Tudor, Evan J., 1885-

The collection includes mostly drawings for Tudor's furniture designs and are arranged by drawing number. Notable projects include the design of the Interchemical Corporation offices, in collaboration with Robert Meyer, as well as the Vanadium Corporation of America offices. The collection also includes 9 sketchbooks. Sketchbooks #1-7 and #9 consist of drawings made by Tudor while likely an apprentice. Sketchbook #8 contains drawings made while working for White, Allom & Co. Notable clients include "Dr. A", "R.G.L." The scrapbook contains clippings and photographs presumably from his professional practice as some of the photographs are labeled "E.J. Tudor." Notable projects include the Rolling Rock Club (Pennsylvania), Dixon House (unknown location), Hampton Court (England), Whitemarsh Hall (England), Mellon Institute (Pittsburgh) and Henry C. Frick (New York). Other papers include correspondence related to the design of the Interchemical Corporation offices, collected print material, 21 photo negatives depicting various travel sites and 13 color charts arranged by manufacturer. The collection also contains lantern slides, which were used by Tudor to teach interior design at New York University. The slides show architectural views and details particularly English, French and American designs as well as interior views, details and furniture.

Cobb, Henry Ives, 1859-1931

Collection is made up of a scrapbook containing 2 pencil on trace sketches, newspaper clippings, and clippings from House and Gardens Magazine (ca 1922) relating to various residences not associated with the architect; 2 diplomas, one from the State Board of Examiners of Architects, Cook County, Chicago (1897) and the other from University of the State of New York State Board for the Registration of Architects (1916); 28 watercolor paintings (ca. 1907) depicting various locations in Europe, including Paris, Florence, Vevay, Versailles, and Venice; 34 pencil drawings of Beaux Art buildings, including residences designed by the architect and illustrations for Good Housekeeping Magazine; and photographs of Salisbury and Winchester Cathedrals, which do not appear to have been taken by the architect.

Ferriss, Hugh, 1889-1962
Hugh Ferriss (1889-1962) was an architectural renderer known for his vision of the modern city and his ability to translate vast projects into dramatic but clear-cut images. Ferriss published two books: The Metropolis of Tomorrow (1929) and Power of Buildings (1953). The collection was donated to Avery Library by Ferriss' family after his death, and has been supplemented by several later additions from other sources. 363 original drawings in the collection have been photographed and digitized and can be viewed via links in the finding aid's container listing.

Welcher, Jeanne Kleinfield
Collected by Jeanne Kleinfield Welcher (1923-2010), great granddaughter of Samuel Putnam Avery Sr. (1822-1905), this collection contains materials pertaining to the philanthropic efforts of the Avery Family during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries in the United States. The collection contains institutional documents, professional and personal correspondence, newspaper clippings, visual and research material, and personal affects pertaining to three generations of the Avery Family.

Van Der Smissen, Lila W., 1893-1948

The collection contains three albums: [1] Morris High School (Bronx, NY) Scrapbook, 1909-1913, which contains ephemera and autographs collected by Van Der Smissen while a student at the first public school in the Bronx, NY ; [2] Album of Christmas Greeting Cards, 1920s-1930s, which contains a collection of greeting cards sent to Van Der Smissen from students and faculty of The School of Architecture, Columbia University ; [3] Autograph Book, 1936, containing an original poem and a collection of autographs compiled by CU School of Architecture students and possibly faculty and presented to Van Der Smissen on her twentieth anniversary at the school.

Architectural drawings and photographs of buildings designed by the firm dating approximately from its founding to the 1950s. Among those represented are buildings at the World's Columbian Exhibition, Chicago, 1893; Pennsylvania Railroad Station, New York, 1906-1910; restoration, 1903, of the White House, Washington, D.C.; buildings at Columbia University's Morningside Heights campus, New York; Boston Public Library, Boston, Mass.; E.W. Morgan mansion; Municipal Building, N.Y.; Col. Elliott Shepherd House, Scarborough, N.Y.; buildings at Amherst College, Amherst, Mass.; Bellevue Hospital, New York; various New York City residences; and others. Also included are competition drawings for the New York Public Library; miscellaneous drawings and sketches; photographs of the partners and of other members of the firm; lists of the firm's work; clippings of articles about the firm; lists of the firm's employees; billing records, 1953-1955; account books, 1940s-1950s; bank books, 1895-1955; award certificates; and other office miscellany.

Sobotka, Walter

This collection contains architectural records, student work, correspondence and professional writings related to the academic and architectural practice of Walter Sobotka. The largest portion of the collection, Series 1, relates to his architectural practice and contains drawings, files, and a scrapbook of photographs and articles pertaining to his work in Europe and America. The majority of his projects consisted of residential buildings and interiors in Austria along with furniture designs. However, there is also a selection of theater interiors that Sobotka designed for RKO across the United States. Series 2 contains a limited selection of Sobotka's lectures and writings, as well as correspondence. This series also contains material relating to two of his unpublished writings, The Prefabricated House and Principles of Design, including copies of the manuscripts, correspondence with publishers, and research materials. A bound version of Principles of Design is catalogued separately and contains an appendix in which Sobotka translated into English excerpts of his correspondence with the Viennese architect Josef Frank. Series 3 contains some artwork and student drawings, as well as a few personal letters.
