Bard Family

Correspondence, documents, and genealogical records of the Bard and related Muirson, Prime, and Sands families of New York and New Jersey. Prominent among the papers is the correspondence of William Bard, 1778-1853, to his daughter, Susan Sands, his son-in-law, Ferdinand Sands, and his grandson, Joseph Sands. Includes 18 letters from Samuel Bard, 1742-1821, physician and professor of medicine at Columbia College, to his grandson, Francis Upton Johnston, medical student at Columbia and house doctor at New York Hospital. The letters deal with personal affairs, Francis' scholastic progress and topics of interest to the medical profession. Thereis also a pastel portrait of John Bard by James Sharples.

Halsband, Robert, 1914-1989

Personal and professional papers including correspondence, manuscripts, documents, diaries, journals, photographs, and printed materials relating to his teaching at various universities, his literary studies and writings, and his professional activities in such organizations as the Moder Language Association and P.E.N. His correspondents include contemporary authors such as Edmund Blunden, Christopher Hassall, Louis Kronenberger; scholars such as James P. Clifford, Leon Edel, and A.L. Rowse. There are also some letters collected by Halsband, including those by Mrs Piozzi, John Wilkes (1727-1797) and John Stuart, 3rd Earl of Bute (1713-1792). Among the manuscripts are notes, drafts, typescripts, and proofs of his LIFE OF LADY WORTLEY MONTAGU (Oxford, 1956) and COMPLETE LETTERS OF LADY MARY WORTLEY MONTAGU (Oxford, 1965-1967). Also, manuscripts and typescripts of Halsband's diaries, journals, lectures, articles, book reviews, and essays. The printed materials include ephemera, books, and offprints by Halsband and books by other authors inscribed to him. There is a watercolor portrait of Halsband by Stephen Andrews, London, ca. 1966.

Parsons, Coleman O., 1905-1991

Letters, manuscripts, notes, memorabilia, photographs, and printed material. Cataloged letters from George Colman the Elder, English dramatist; Lord Jeffrey, Scottish judge and critic; Andrew Lang, Scottish author; Robert Montgomery, English poet; Richard Parsons Rosse,1st Earl of Rosse; George Thomson, friend of Robert Burns and music editor; Bernard De Voto, critic, and S.R. Crockett, Scottish author. Cataloged manuscripts by Thomas Campbell, Scottish poet, James Montgomery, and E.I. Powell. Cataloged diaries of June and Coleman O. Parsons of their trip around the world in 1936-37. There are also ca.700 pages of notes by Coleman O. Parsons on various Scottish authors(including Sir Walter Scott), Scottish folk-lore and history, and Scottish poetry. Most of the notes concern his research on Francis Colman, George Colman the Elder, and George Colman the Younger. In addition there is the mss. for his book "Studies in Eccentricity"; the mss. of an 18th century Scottish ghost story entitled "A Cool Dialogue between the Living and the Dead" and notes and essays on Mark Twain, as well as a poetry album kept by Elizabeth Saynor Marshall and photographs of Parsons in South Africa.

Jeanroy, Alfred, 1859-1953

Professional and personal papers, as well as materials collected by, Sorbonne professor Alfred Jeanroy. Material in Professor Jeanroy's handwriting includes lengthy as well as brief manuscripts, lectures, preparatory notes for works planned, and material for new editions of published writings. Forty-one notebooks also comprise texts of lectures in his handwriting. Many of these deal with French poetry of the Middle Ages, some with linguistic subjects. There are manuscript notes showing continuous revision of these lectures. Boxes of personal papers include documents dating from 1727, marriage contracts, wills, military and legal parchments, and old family letters. Also, many manuscripts, some of them never published, by Madame B.A. Jeanroy; and several hundred pamphlets and seven books by Professor Jeanroy and his colleagues and contemporaries.

Seligman, Edwin R. A (Edwin Robert Anderson), 1861-1939

Correspondence, manuscripts and documents. Included among his personal and professional correspondence are letters from famous economists collected by Seligman. Among these are: I) William Shirley (Box 95). 1741-1745. Copies of letters and documents by Shirley, Royal Governor of Massachusetts, addressed chiefly to the Board of Trade, London; II) Paul Flobart (Box 96). RECHERCHES SUR LES BILLETS DE LA BANQUE DE LAW, 1716-1720. Lille, 1920. Notes, page proof and printed for of this pamphlet; III) John Francis Bray Papers (Box 97). Bray, 1809-1895, early socialist writer and labor agitator in England, 1822, returned to America in 1842. Michigan experiences, 1842-1896, papers 1860-1890; IV) Ernest Jones Papers. Correspondence, family and business papers of Ernest Jones, 1819-1869, English militant socialist and leader of the Chartist movement, and publisher of two newspapers propagating Marxist doctrines. Collection consists of ca.1,708 items, and some family correspondence and mementoes. The most valuable part appears to be his notes refuting various libel charges brought against him. Astuto, Philip L.

Microfilm copies of manuscripts by Francisco Xavier Eugenio de Santa Cruz y Espejo (1747-1795), early Ecuadorian political figure and precursor of Ecuadorian independence. Espejo, a doctor, helped found the Escuela de Concordia in Quito. Prof. Astuto copied these manuscripts from various governmental and private libraries in Ecuador and Colombia while on a research fellowship from the Organization of American States in 1973 and on a research grant from St. John's University in 1975. The collection includes a printed volume of three of Espejo's works edited by Astuto in 1981 & his typescript (1,184 p., with his corrections) of Las Obras Educativas by Espejo.

Dunning, William Archibald, 1857-1922

Correspondence; miscellaneous letters, manuscripts, clippings, and printed material, 1867-1922, relating to the American Historical Association, the Centenary of Anglo-American Peace, and Dartmouth College; memorabilia, and photographs and postcards. Also, Dunning family correspondence and manuscripts, 1781-1915, including letters from Robert Kerr to W.A. Dunning; letters and post cards to Matilda A. Dunning; journals and diaries of William A. Dunning, 1873-1875 and undated, and Charlotte Dunning, 1899-1915; miscellaneous letters among family members; visiting cards; a composition written by Dunning while a boy; and letters relating to Dartmouth college. The collection also includes manuscript notes for lectures, articles, reviews, books, and chapters by Dunning. Some subjects include: "The British Empire and the United States", "Carl Schurz", "England and Ireland", and "Political Theory".

Renwick Family

This collection is primarily concerned with Prof. James Renwick and his professional correspondence and papers, both as Professor of Natural Philosophy (Physics) at Columbia College and as a leading engineer. Many certificates of membership in honorary societies are included. There are letters from Washington Irving (1783-1859) to Prof. Renwick and to his mother, Jane Jeffrey Renwick, pertaining to contemporary events and Irving's own activities. The letters to Mrs. Renwick are about the travels and experiences of Irving and Renwick abroad. The collection also covers the affairs of the Prof. Renwick's grandfather, including documents concerning his land grants in New York State, and those of James Armstrong Renwick, including his valedictory address at Columbia College in 1876 and his class reunion in 1916. There are many legal documents, letters, and manuscripts of various members of the Renwick and Brevoort families; among these are Prof. Renwick's notes on his family genealogy and a memoir of Jane Jeffrey Renwick. Correspondents include Clement Clarke Moore, John A. Dix, Martin Van Buren, Secretary of State John Forsyth, and Secretary of the Navy James K. Paulding. There is one letter from Sir Edward Sabine (1788-1883), President of the Royal Society, giving his views on the American Civil War.

Pillionnel, Jacques-Henri, 1897-

Correspondence, manuscripts, journals, documents, subject files, photographs, memorabilia, and printed matter. The collection includes Pillionnel's routine correspondence, manuscripts in French and English of his poems, plays and prose works, many of which are unpublished, and his "Journal Intime" which covers the period 1932-1972. Included is an oil portrait of Pillionnel by his friend Peter Hayward. One document folder contains Pillionnel family records (birth certificates, baptismal records, passports) from the late eighteenth and nineteenth centuries
