This collection contains the records of the Albany Hardware and Iron Co., a wholesale hardware distributor in Albany, New York. The collection contains administrative records, photographs, catalogs, and scrapbooks, along with newspapers ads and articles on the company and the men who ran it.

This collection is composed of letters written by brothers Albert and Garrett Vander Veer to family members. Garrett and Albert were the fifth and seventh children, respectively, of Abraham Harris and Sarah (Martin) Vander Veer and were officers in the Union Army during the American Civil War. The majority of the letters are addressed to the Vander Veer’s sister and brother-in-law, Esther and John Craig.

The Banks Family Papers collection consists of personal and legal papers of Robert Lenox Banks and his family, primarily his daughter, Mary Decamp Banks Moore. These include correspondence to and from the Banks Family by local businessmen, politicians, such as New York Governor, John T. Hoffman, and William Vanderbilt, President of the Hudson River Railroad. The documents are mostly personal in nature, describing the private life of a prominent local family of the 19th Century. Also in this collection are photographs, genealogical information, and other items relating to the Banks, Lenox, and Corning families.

The Blasie Family Papers are a collection of materials owned by Henry M. Blasie and relating to the Blasie family. Gray family
James A. Gray founded the Boardman & Gray Piano Manufacturing company of Albany, New York in 1837, with the business expertise and financial support of his business partner, William G. Boardman. The company patented their own design for the Dolce Campana attachment for the Piano Forte, and enjoyed great renown, including designing a model for singer Jenny Lind. This collection includes books, community newsletters, correspondence, newspaper clippings, photographs, sheet music, and song books.

Contains items from the Borthwick, Smith, and Strong Families including correspondence, diaries, family histories, financial papers, land records, a school notebook, and a manuscript cookbook. Additional material includes two woman's diaries, land records, a history of the Bushnell Family, and Hattie E. Kurtz's school notebook. Of unusual interest is a black & white photograph of Abraham Lincoln taken by Matthew Brady in Washington, DC in 1864.

Ehrmann, Emma Boyd
James Boyd (1742-1832) and Jane MacMaster Boyd (1751-1831) arrived in Albany, New York, from Scotland in 1774. In 1796, James founded the Arch Street Brewery, which would later become the Albany Brewing Company. This collection contains correspondence, personal papers, and photographs.

Burdick, Joel Wakeman, 1853-
Joel W. Burdick accepted a position as a clerk with the D & H (Delaware and Hudson) Railroad Company in 1879, and moved with his wife to Albany, New York. He eventually rose to the position of passenger agent, and he and his wife traveled extensively throughout the United States and Canada. This collection contains correspondence, newspaper clippings, and photographs.

The collection consists of a random grouping of ambrotypes, daguerreotypes and tintypes; all photographic techniques popular in the United States from the late 1830’s to the turn of the century (19th into 20th). Most of the collection, like the predominant subject matter of these photographic processes, are portraits. Some landscape photography was done using each of the three photographic techniques; few survive. Landscape photography would blossom with the advent of the “paper process” which, though still cumbersome by today’s standards, was much less cumbersome than the equipment and process required, even for the tintype.

Contains prints, photographs, and texts related to the planning of the Robert Burns statue in Washington Park Historic District (Albany, New York). Calverley researched Robert Burns’ true appearance, previous depictions, statues of Burns, statues of the intended style, and illustrated interpretations of Burns’ most famous poems. Information concerning the St. Andrew’s Society, who commissioned the statue, is included.

Cipkowski Family
These black and white photographs – created within the date range of 1900s-1950s [bulk 1920s-1955] – mainly document family life and familiar and vanished streetscapes that tell a story of South Front Street life in Hudson, NY in the early-mid 20th century. The South Front Street neighborhood of Hudson was mostly demolished by Urban Renewal in the 1970s, and many of these photographs provide a view of a neighborhood that no longer exists. Most of the photos were taken by various relatives and friends of the Cipkowski family. A large portion of the photos document the childhood and teenage years of Patricia Cipkowski, who attended St Mary’s Academy in Hudson, N.Y. in the 1950s. There are also a few studio portraits made in Hudson, N.Y. and in New Jersey.

Circus materials include programs, periodicals, clippings, articles, route books, broadsides / posters, and photographs. Also includes a typed account by Richard C. Ellsworth of travelling with a circus in 1902, visiting Ithaca and Elmira, New York; Williamsport, Lock Haven, DuBois, and Butler, Pennsylvania; and Wheeling, West Virginia.

This collection focuses on Cooperstown, NY and consists of notes, photographs, and lists identifying people in photographs but the photographs are missing. Series 1 is a timeline (1792-1919) that lists significant Cooperstown events. Series 2 consists of notes on various topics and people of Cooperstown. Series 3 consists primarily of annotated group photographs and lists of people.

On November 21, 1868, under the guidance of Dr. Ebell, sixty-two people, mostly teachers, alumni, and students from the Albany Female Academy (known today as the Albany Academy for Girls) met in the school to form the Albany Chapter of the Dana Natural History Society. The Society was named in honor of Dr. James Dwight Dana a famous geologist, mineralogist, and zoologist from Yale College. This collection contains materials such as newspaper clippings, member written articles, histories, documents from meetings and proceedings, scrapbooks, photographs, letters, awards, and other ephemera.

Button, Daniel E. (Daniel Evan), 1917-2009
Daniel Evan Button (1917-2009) was a Republican politician elected as a member of the U.S. House of Representatives. After his landslide win for the 1966 election, Button once again ran and was re-elected to his seat on the House of Representatives as a representative of New York. He ran for a third term in 1970, but was ultimately defeated. This collection contains newspaper articles, letters, speeches, documents, photographs, and published works in his memory.

Lathrop, Dorothy P. (Dorothy Pulis), 1891-1980
The Lathrop sisters, Dorothy Pulis Lathrop (1891-1980) and Gertrude Katherine Lathrop, (1896-1986) were from Albany, New York. Dorothy was a writer and illustrator of children’s books, while Gertrude was a sculptor, particularly of small animals. Their mother, Ida F. Pulis Lathrop, was a portrait, still life, and landscape artist. The Dorothy and Gertrude Lathrop Papers include correspondence, book lists, clippings, photographs and books to, from, and about Dorothy and Gertrude Lathrop.

Edwards, Isaac, -1879
Isaac Edwards (1819-1879) was born in South Corinth, New York. He married Anna (1826-1907), a granddaughter of Ezra Ames, and had three children who survived to adulthood. Isaac eventually became a professor at the Albany Law School, served on the Albany Board of Public Instruction, and became a member of the Congregational Church. This collection includes clippings, essays, photographs, and other Edwards family-related materials.

Mr. Weil apparently used film packs for his 4x5 shots and made his selection for printing after developing them. He also apparently used a 2-1/4 x 2-1/4 cameras at the same time, so that he has negatives of the same scene in a couple of formats and several different exposures. Mr. Weil also made several duplicate prints; some of which may have been made for commercial purposes; some for technical reasons, as he notes in various places different exposure times and paper types.

Fleet's direct predecessor was the Providence Bank, in Providence, Rhode Island, formed in 1791. Through mergers over the years, it settled as Fleet Financial Group in 1992. After becoming FleetBoston in 1999, the company was bought out by Bank of America in 2004. A collection of family papers from George Hornell and Ursula Jane (Boyd) Thacher and their three children, Margaret Euphemia, John Boyd and George Hornell. The bulk of the collection is correspondence to and from various family members between the 1830’s to the 1880’s. The collection has a limited amount of the children’s schoolwork and grades; financial papers concerning day-to-day living and educational expenses including numerous bill heads of Albany business from that period; and a limited amount of unidentified photographs. Lastly, the collection includes financial materials from the Albany Army Relief Bazaar in 1864. A list of who donated money and other items is included.

Ruth Gretchen Weeber (1913-1984) was an Albany, New York sketcher and painter of old Albany architecture. Her father Christian, developed the Weebermobile, and her sister, Marion, was a jewelry artist and designer. Harris Ottaway
This collection contains the personal papers, photographs, writings, and scrapbooks of Mr. Harris Ottaway (1904-1999) as well as his decades of correspondence (1978-1999) with countless pen pals, most of whom were residents at the Kingsway Arms Nursing Home and retirement centers. Mr. Ottaway’s personal organizational system of the correspondence materials is left intact and generally follows a pure chronological order with an index.

This collection assembles hundreds of photographs and some slides that have come into the possession of the Hudson Area Library over the years, either by donation or purchase. Hamlin, Huybertie Pruyn, 1873-1964
Hybertie Lansing Pruyn Hamlin (1873-1964) was born in Albany, New York, to John Van Schaick Lansing Pruyn (1811-1877) and Anna Fenn Parker Pruyn (1840-1909). Her father was a U.S. Congressman, representing New York’s 14th District. One of her sisters was Harriet Langdon Pruyn Rice (1868-1939). Hybertie married Charles Sumner Hamlin (1861-1938) in 1898. Charles was a lawyer, delegate to three international peace conferences, and later, the first Governor appointed to the Federal Reserve Board in 1914.

Langdon, Ida
The Ida Langdon Papers contain an assortment of teaching and lecture materials from her early tenure as a professor of English Literature at Elmira College, including collegiate materials from her matriculation at Bryn Mawr College. The collection also includes materials from Dr. Lane Cooper, a professor at Cornell University where Langdon received her Doctorate and various letters of correspondence and newspaper clippings. Items concerning her association with her uncle, Mark Twain, are at a minimum.

Jinny & Wendy Neefus Photographers

Located at 743 Warren Street in Hudson, Jinny & Wendy Neefus Photographers closed in 2013 after over 60 years in business. The studio was a local mainstay for graduation portraits and other life event photo sessions during the three generations they were in business. The Neefus family also photographed buildings, nature, and life in Hudson and across Columbia County, and processed photos for commercial use. The Jinny & Wendy Neefus Photographers Collection contains more than eighty sets of original negatives created by Jinny & Wendy Neefus Photographers between 1947 and 1989. Forty-six of these negatives were digitized by the library and printed as proof prints. The images document life in Hudson and Columbia County. Subjects and clients represented in this collection include, but are not limited to: various Hudson businesses (such as Grand Union, Kritzman-Maskin, Lawrence Tavern, General Worth Hotel, Smith’s Tire Shop, Scovill’s, and Paramount Grill) Hudson Firemen's Home, Red Mills in Claverack, Mount Washington House in Hillsdale, Columbia Country Club, Master’s Farm in Copake Falls, State Bank of Albany, Swiss Farms in Philmont, House of History in Kinderhook, Rip Van Winkle Clinic, Filney Mills in Philmont, Lakeview Inn in Chatham; a 1948 Hudson flood, a 1958 snowfall, a Hudson soap box derby, Christmastime in Hudson 1947, the 1950 Hudson Halloween parade. This is a useful collection for anyone interested in learning more about buildings, businesses, and the history of the area, especially in the 1940s and 1950s.

Adam Blake, Jr. (1830-1881) had a well-established career in the hotel industry prior to having the Kenmore Hotel built in 1878. The adopted son of a man who had been enslaved, Adam worked his way up in the hotel industry, and eventually opened the Kenmore, for which he spared no expense. Although Blake died before he could long enjoy the fruits of his labor, the Kenmore continued for many years, and was eventually purchased and renovated into luxury apartments.

Consists of land records (deeds, indentures, leases, and mortgages) associated with Ebenezer and his son Charles S. Landers for parcels in Afton, Bainbridge, Jericho, and South Bainbridge, Chenango County, NY. Among the other names included on these documents are: Sarah C. Landers, Margaret C. Landers, Arthur L. Fisher, Marshall Hill, Devillo Church, George Bliss, and Peter Betts. A scrapbook entitled "Landers Family Records - line of Thomas Landers of Lenox, MA," contains original Landers family correspondence and receipts, 1781-1846; newspaper clippings; photographs; and a color copy of the Landers family shield.

The Lansing/Townsend/Spencer Family Papers span the period from 1717-1889 and contain correspondence, diaries, financial documents, and photographs relating to family life.

Papers from the Kingsmen, an African-American social/civic club in Albany, NY from 1956-1958, collected by Larry Johnson, the Secretary of the club. Papers include meeting minutes; greeting cards; social invitations including an invitation to The Kingsmen’s first event; a 24-page program from their first event; official correspondence; and a photograph of Larry Johnson.

Hughes, Marian I.
Marian I. Hughes was born and raised in Albany, New York. She is the sister of K. Leroy Irvis, the 130th Speaker of the Pennsylvania House of Representatives, and author of This Land of Fire. Although born in Albany, her life has been spent on an international stage, where she has been a prominent supporter of black studies and improved race relations.

The collection includes an extensive genealogical study of the Falk, Herschowitz and Rosenfeld families done by Louise Marwill. The study follows the family from Germany to Albany and is comprised of families stories and photographs. There is an extensive section on the family escaping Germany during the Holocaust which includes Kathe Mueller Slonim’s first hand account of what she witnessed in Germany and letters written by Gottlieb Rosenfeld about what he witnessed in Frankfurt and his desperation to get his family safely to the United States. There is a small collection of post cards sent by Henry Perle during World War II. There are several pieces of school material for Louise Marwill including school programs, certificates and photographs. There is also material from Louise’s marriage to Lawrence Marwill on June 19, 1960.

Schenectady High School (N.Y.)
This collection contains materials from the Schenectady High School system. The bulk of collection dates from 1931 to 1983, however, some materials date from as early as 1927 and as late as 1992. Materials are almost entirely from Linton High School (1957-1992) and Mont Pleasant High School (1931-1992), though a few materials relate to the whole district and a few to Nott Terrace High School (1903-1958). This collection contains newspaper clippings relating to staff and students of both schools, some theater performance materials and posters, Linton HS library and school construction materials, and some general Schenectady School district materials, school newspapers and literary newspapers, photographs, maps, and blueprints.

Morris Gerber was a typesetter at the Albany, NY newspaper, the Times-Union. The Morris Gerber Photograph Collection represents a significant documentation of the architectural, social, cultural and economic development of Albany's history from the 1860's into the 1970's.

Karanovich, Nicholas
The collection contains 130 photographs reproduced from the original nitrate negatives of James B. Pond’s photographs of Mark Twain on his North American Lecture Tour, accompanied by his wife and daughter, Olivia Langdon Clemens and Clara Clemens as well as by Major Pond’s wife, Marion Glass Pond. The collection includes a copy of James B. Pond’s typescript draft of his account of Mark Twain in “Eccentricities of Genius” and a typescript copy of his journal from the tour.

Helen Fay (Juneman) “Aunt Helen” was one of the owners of the John Mistletoe Bookshop in Albany, New York. Olga H. Briggs was a teacher of English at New York State College, which is where the two women met and became friends. This collection consists of correspondence, clippings, and transcripts.

The Palmer-Gavit Family Papers include the correspondence, writings, genealogy, scrapbooks, photographs, and articles pertaining to the entire Gavit family. The collection also contains correspondence, reference materials, scrapbooks, record books and writings related to Erastus Dow Palmer and Walter Launt Palmer.

The Pruyn Family Papers contains documents relating to three consecutive generations of the John Pruyn Family, along with genealogies and personal papers of more distant family relations. An autograph collection of presidents, statesmen, and local historic figures is included. The ownership of 43-45 North Pearl Street is documented from the first sale in 1679 to the last in 1968. The estates of Eleanor Erving, Justine Bayard Erving and Van Rensselaer Pruyn are also documented.

Rowles' Studio
The Rowles’ Studio Collection mostly contains reproduction images created by Rowles’ Studio in Hudson, NY, which first opened in 1851 as the Francis Forshew Photography Studio and was Hudson’s first photography studio. By 1948, Rowles’ Studio had a photographic library dating back more than 90 years, which traced the progress of the city. A large portion of the prints and negatives in this collection are reproduction prints from that library, (known as the Rowles’ Studio Collection), copies of which were donated to the History Room by the last owner of the business, Carmine Ciancetta, in the final years that the shop was in operation. The bulk of the images are digital proof prints of photos taken by Rowles’ Studio in the late-19th century to late-20th century. The proof prints were created for the History Room from original and copy negatives donated by Ciancetta. However, the origin of some of these proof prints is unknown. Rowles’ Studio Collection images are mostly commercial, documenting buildings, industry, transportation, people, and events, in the City of Hudson, NY, as well as the surrounding area, including several Columbia County courthouses, circa 1890-1910, Claverack College, Kaaterskill Mountain House, and more. Additional materials in this collection include glass plate negative portraits related to the Rowles family, spanning 1890s-1940s (mostly unidentified, creator unknown), and original negatives (1940s-1950s) related to the Rowles family (creator unknown); as well as cabinet cards and carte de visite portraits created by Forshew and Whitbeck (mid-19th to mid-20th century). The collection is divided into four series. Digital surrogates of many of the images in this collection are available on the History Room computer.

The material that now comprises the African-Americans in Albany Research Collection began in 1967 as a research project at Guilderland Junior/Senior High School where Ruth Winne Roberts was teaching at the time. The collection contains brochures, notes, photocopied documents, clippings, invitations, programs, articles, bibliographies and photographs relating to the history of African Americans in Albany.

Charles Argow Schade, a prominent Albany architect during the mid-20th Century, was born in Albany in 1910 to Catherine and William C. Schade, who was also an architect. Particularly known for his work on churches around Albany, he designed the Christian Education Building of the First Congregational Church of Albany in 1960, as well as the Freihofer Baking Plant addition in 1963. His father, William, was also a well-known designer of religious and residential properties. Two of his works were the Slingerlands United Methodist Church in 1871, and the St. Casimir’s Church Complex in Albany in 1896.

Thomas Worth Olcott (1795-1880) was born in Hudson, Columbia County, New York, to Josiah and Carolina Worth Olcott. Olcott eventually became president of the Mechanics and Farmer Bank in Albany, New York, and served on the boards of the Albany Law School and the Dudley Observatory, among others. This collection contains estate records, correspondence, newspaper clippings, bills, account books, photographs, scrapbooks, and genealogical information.
