Collins, Merriam, and Lyon Family
Personal and business papers of members of these related families, especially Charles Bush Collins, Lyman R. Lyon, Clinton L. Merriam, Charles C. Merriam and his wife Florence Lyon Merriam. Includes letters, diaries, military commissions, wills, inventories, cash accounts, deeds, and field books relating to their large land holdings in Lewis County, N.Y., their lumber business, and their involvement in politics. Also contains a large number of household bills of the Lyon family.

Palmer, Erastus Dow, 1817-1904
Erastus Dow Palmer (1817-1904) was an American sculptor. Born in Pompey, New York, he and his family moved to Albany, New York, in 1849 when Palmer began working on large-scale sculptures. His sculpture, Angel at the Sepulchre (1865), remains in Albany. Palmer son’s Walter Launt Palmer (1854-1932), also became an artist, best known for his winter scenes. Following his death in 1904, Erastus Palmer was buried in the Albany Rural Cemetery. This collection contains correspondence, personal papers, and photographs.

Harris Ottaway
This collection contains the personal papers, photographs, writings, and scrapbooks of Mr. Harris Ottaway (1904-1999) as well as his decades of correspondence (1978-1999) with countless pen pals, most of whom were residents at the Kingsway Arms Nursing Home and retirement centers. Mr. Ottaway’s personal organizational system of the correspondence materials is left intact and generally follows a pure chronological order with an index.

Julia Ann Hawkins (1782-1841) was the daughter of Jonas Hawkins of Stony Brook. Her brothers included Micah Hawkins and Jonas Hawkins, Jr. She married Thomas Shepard Mount (1778-1814) of Setauket. Among their children were the artists Henry Smith Mount, Shepard Alonzo Mount and William Sidney Mount. Papers of Hawkins family members include military papers of Jonas Hawkins, (both Sr. and Jr.), bonds, receipts and other papers of Jonas Hawkins, Jr., as postmaster at Setauket, c1815; correspondence, receipts, librettos of Micah Hawkins, including a libretto of his opera The Saw Mill, and probate of his will, 1833. Papers of the children of Julia Hawkins and Thomas Shepard Mount and their descendants include family correspondence, copy books, poems, songs, diaries, accounts, guardianship papers, wills, deeds, legal papers, postcards, photographs and other material of Henry Smith Mount, Robert Nelson Mount, Shepard Alonzo Mount, Elizabeth Elliot Mount, Robert Henry Mount, Evelina Mount, Ruth Mount Seabury, and others. Items of note include papers of Judge Thomas Shepard Mount (1834-1900) concerning the Stony Brook school district, 1870-1899; correspondence of John Brewster Mount with Orville B. Ackerly, 1901; correspondence, clippings, genealogical material and historical notes of various museums concerning Mount art work and family history. Papers of Malcolm Mount (son of Henry Smith Mount) who moved to Gilroy, California, and his daughter Sarah Fisher (“Daisy”) Mount, include letters, photographs, postcards, diaries, certificates and contracts of Sarah F. Mount with the San Francisco School Board, and letters to Sarah from a Japanese-American friend who was sent to an internment camp in Utah, 1942-1945. Also, deeds, wills, title abstracts, maps and other documents relating to family property in Stony Brook and Smithtown; an agreement between Charles Q. Archdeacon and Edward P. Buffet about the sale of the Hawkins-Mount house, and correspondence between Edward P. Buffet and Orville B. Ackerly.

The Samuel S. Forman Papers contain administrative records, books, cattle and livestock papers, papers pertaining to the Cazenovia Post Office, certificates, correspondence, estate records, genealogy, Jonathan Denise Ledyard, government records, land documents, legal documents, lists, papers pertaining to the Madison County Court, John H. Oley, Richard Button Patent, slave documents, store documents, speeches and addresses, writings, and miscellaneous papers. Although the Samuel S. Forman Papers are primarily made up of business documents and papers from Forman's time as a shop owner of general stores for the Holland Land Company, and a store in Middletown Point, New Jersey. These business documents and papers include: account books and statements, ashes, bills and receipts, calculations, cashbooks, correspondence, daybooks, invoice books, ledgers, memorandums, orders for payment, petty lists, receipt books, registers, scratch books, and suppliers for Forman's stores. Some business documents and papers pertain to business dealings with specific people and organizations such as Jonathan and Samuel Forman Sr., Oneida Turnpike Road Co., the Cazenovia Establishment, the Sloop Monmouth, Jacob H. Ten Eyck, Sweet and Lovejoy, the Third Great Western Turnpike, S. Van Rensselaer, and Isaac Van Vleck.

The Strong Collection is composed of land records, legal documents, correspondence, receipts, genealogical information, photographs, and other documents pertaining to the Bradt, Strong, and Van Patten families, collected by H. Elizabeth Strong (Hannah Elizabeth Vedder Strong). The collection includes a significant amount of material related to early settlement of Schenectady, as well as the land and trusteeship disputes in the city.
