The Ransom Varney papers are divided into nine folders and spans the time from about 1877 to about 1922. The materials within the collection include professional correspondence, letters to and from Ransom’s wife, other personal correspondence, envelopes, post cards, bills, receipts, invoices and statements and an entire folder containing blank business forms.
- Biographical / Historical:
Ransom Varney was born in October 1857 in Queensbury to parents Ransom Varney and Adelia Brisbane. According the 1860 census of the United States, Ransom had three siblings, Josiah S., Taylor Bliven, and Richard Brewer. He married Jennie Cook in 1883 and had their first son, Ransom W., in September of that year. They had their second son, Vincent, in 1888. Jennie passed away in 1912 at the age of 61.
A lifelong resident of Wilton, New York, he was elected Justice of the Peace for the Town of Wilton in 1894, served as Supervisor of the Town from 1898 to 1899, and served as a road commissioner and the Superintendent of Highways for the Town for several years. He passed away in August 1936 at his home in Wilton at the age of 79.
