Background

Scope and Content:

This collection contains much genealogy material related to the Covert family across the United States and in Holland and therefore spans from the 1600s to early 20th century. Also included are materials in the late 20th century created by Covert descendants.

Biographical / Historical:

Dr. Nelson B Covert was born in Ovid on January 22, 1840. He attended the Cleveland Homeopathic Medical College and graduated in 1862. He studied medicine with Dr. Eddy Sr. and came to Geneva with him in 1864-5. Dr. Covert and Dr. Eddy were partners for a time before Dr. Covert went into practice by himself. He married Catherine Scott and had two children, Jay B Covert and Elfreida Watson. Dr. Nelson Covert was instrumental in forming the Covert Family Association in 1875. His son, Jay Covert, was born in Geneva in 1875, graduated from Geneva High School, then Hobart College in 1898, receiving his medical degree from Columbia University in 1902. He was a leading physician in Geneva, practicing with his father until his father’s death in 1908.
