Background

Scope and Content:

This collection contains various personal papers, estate related papers, and other ephemera from William Barden and his son George Barden from 1904 through 1947. One set of receipts and bills came from Clifton Springs Sanitarium where William Barden spent his last few months from 1929 to 1930.

Biographical / Historical:

William Barden lived in Hall, NY, born in 1855 in Yates County and died on January 31, 1930 (having lived in Geneva for a few years prior). His parents were Perry and Dorothy Barden and he married Agnes Rippey. Agnes was born in 1854 and died in 1936. Their children were Nettie (d. 4 months), Newton V, George O, and Jane Marguerite Barden Severinghaus. The Bardens are buried in Bellona Cemetery.

The Barden family has a long history in Yates County, settling very early on in the history of white men coming to the area. William Barden owned and operated the family farm as a dairy and creamery, also producing apples. George Barden married Catherine Scott of Bellona and lived in Geneva, operating the business of Barden & Salladin until a year before his death in 1949.
