Background

Scope and Content:

Mainly consisting of correspondence and Eleanore’s research notes, the files show the research process for Mr. Backensto and Eleanore when trying to map the Backenstose family genealogy.

Biographical / Historical:

This collection mainly focuses on Jacob and John Trimmer Backenstose among inquiries into their relatives and descendants. EB Backensto, the main correspondent with Eleanore Clise, provided Eleanore with the two volumes of the Backenstose/Backenstoss genealogy books which are filed in the research library.

Arrangement:

This collection was compiled by Archivist Eleanore Clise around in the 1970s from correspondence conducted with researchers looking for family information. She wrote: “After 20 years I still have not found time to organize the material in this box. It ranges from parts that are in some order to scattered notes that will make no sense to the persons who may look here for information. It is more or less a personal collection from the early 1970s.”

The collection was then organized into folders in 2011 by an unknown volunteer into one box of Backenstose, Whitney, and Logie families. Given there is no connection between the families, the folders have been split up and filed appropriately.
