Background

Scope and Content:

This collection includes photos, news clippings, student publications, reunion materials, and ephemera. Some photos, ephemera, and publications cover the time when the high schoolers were attending Geneva Classical & Union School, but are included in this collection for continuity.

The collection covers most of the time since the Geneva High School was named in 1923 through present day, but some time periods have more items than others.

Biographical / Historical:

The current Geneva High School has encompassed two separate buildings in two locations. The one built in 1923 was constructed over top of the former Pulteney St Cemetery (exhumed to Glenwood Cemetery) at the corner of Pulteney and Milton streets, next to the former Geneva Classical & Union School. (The GCUS was used as a Junior School, accommodating the higher grades of the grammar schools.) It was expanded upon in 1965 in the southern half of the building, including the addition of a new gymnasium and pool area.

The current high school on Carter Rd. was built in 1981 and the former building was used as the Geneva Middle School until the 2004 school year after a new building was constructed next to the high school on Carter Rd.

The building was sold to the Finger Lakes Community College and leased as their Geneva campus starting in 2005, using it as of 2007. In 2012 Ontario County purchased the building with plans to make it the permanent home of the Geneva campus center. After much discussion and input from the Geneva community, the building was razed in 2014.
