Biographical / Historical:

Charles Bush Collins (1807-1881) was the son of Levi Collins (1778-1819) and Mary "Polly" Bush Collins (1783-1836). He resided in New York City for most of the year, but summered in the town of Collinsville, in Lewis County, New York. His half-sister, Caroline Hart Merriam (1827-1893) married Clinton L. Merriam (1824-1900), who later became a United States Representative, serving in the Fourty-second and Fourty-third Congresses from 1871 to 1875. The Merriams' children included the zoologist Clinton Hart Merriam (1855-1942), the ornithologist Florence Merriam Bailey (1863-1948), and Charles Collins Merriam (1850-1931). Charles Collins Merriam married Florence Lyon Merriam (1851-1931), who was the daughter of Lyman Lyon (1806-1869) and Mary Lyon (1812-1891). This linked the Collins, Merriam, and Lyon families, who were prominent in Lewis County.
