This collection documents the youth and young adulthood of Lucy Medora Walker, 1848-1916 of East Springfield, Otsego County, NY throughcCorrespondence from friends and family, diaries, school papers, programs, and photographs. Topics of discussion in correspondence and diaries include household chores, school, hop harvesting, and church.

Biographical / Historical:

Lucy Medora Walker, (aka Dora, Dode, Dodie, Lucy, Medora, and Petite Walker) 1848-1916, was born in East Springfield, Otsego County, New York, the only child of Hannah (Seabrook VanHorne) Walker, 1816-1907 and Benjamin Walker, 1811-1870. Benjamin Walker was a cabinet maker who operated a cabinet shop in East Springfield. In her childhood, Walker attended a private school in East Springfield. There she took geometry, composition, Latin grammar, declamation and French. From East Springfield, she went to Schenectady to finish her education where she lived with the John (father of Alice) McNee family.

She returned to East Springfield and in 1873 married William Smith Guardenier (ca. 1843- ). He took over her father's business that same year, but later became an undertaker. They had nine children: Lucy Hotchkiss, Benjamin Walker, Blanche Ormiston, W. Harry., Fred V., Doane Sinclair, Edgar VanHorne, Anna G., and Hannah Medora. The family lived in the same house that Walker grew up in. Shedied February 16, 1916 at the age of 68 and was buried in Springfield Cemetery.
