Background

Scope and Content:

The Benjamin F. Bart Papers consist of published works on 19th-century French writer, Gustave Flaubert, exam questions and materials from his time as a professor, and correspondence with other University faculty and staff.

Biographical / Historical:

Benjamin F. Bart was a professor at Syracuse University. He born in Chicago, Illinois on December 21, 1917. Bart attended Harvard for all of his time in higher education, receiving his Ph.D. in 1947. He received his degrees in French language and literature, and taught at Harvard, Pomona College, and the University of Michigan before joining the faculty at Syracuse University in 1956. As a professor in the Department of Romance Languages, he taught classes in French language, literature, and art. Bart was a member of the Senate Library Committee at the University, the editorial board of the French Review, the Modern Language Association of America, and the American Association of Teachers of French. He also served as a freshmen advisor and director of the Poitiers Program, a University study abroad program.

Bart was considered the authority on 19th-century writer Gustave Flaubert. He wrote his first book on Flaubert in 1952 with the help of a Ford Foundation Fellowship award. Among his published works on the writer, Flaubert (1967) is most renowned, though others such as Flaubert's Landscape Descriptions (1956) and The Legendary Sources of Flaubert's "Saint Julien" (1977) are also notable.

Bart left the University in 1967 for a teaching position at the University of Pittsburgh.
