Scope and Content:

The collection contains correspondence (including some to and from George Eastman), agreements, contracts, etc. relating to the construction of the home of George Eastman at 350 (now 900) East Avenue, Rochester, New York. Topics include shingling, painting, plumbing, electrical work, plastering, telephone system, and interior decorating and furnishings. J. Foster Warner, the Rochester architect, oversaw the construction. The former home is now (1980) the International Museum of Photography at the George Eastman House.

Biographical / Historical:

George Eastman (1854-1932), the founder of the Eastman Kodak Company, was a Rochester, New York industrialist, civic leader, and philanthropist.

The papers were received from Richard J. Crego, Assistant Treasurer of the University of Rochester, May 27, 1976.

The collection has been arranged in one chronological order. In the few instances where there were several items of different dates together, they have been filed under the first date.

RESTRICTIONS:

The George Eastman House Construction Papers is open for research use. Researchers are advised to contact the Rare Books Special Collections & Preservation Department prior to visiting. Upon arrival, researchers will also be asked to fill out a registration form and provide photo identification.

TERMS OF ACCESS:

In consultation with a curator, reproductions may be made upon request. Permission to publish materials from the collection must be requested from a curator. Researchers are responsible for determining any copyright questions.
