Scope and Content:

The Alling and Cory Company Papers consists of 11 boxes and additional flat objects of company records, the majority being photographs from the mid-20th century; business records documenting product development, and company departments; and price lists of products made by the company, and other printing companies.

Biographical / Historical:

The Alling and Cory Company was a privately owned printing paper and packaging distributor headquartered in Rochester, New York. Founded by Elihu F. Marshall in 1819, the company was the first paper merchant in the United States, and one of the oldest privately held companies in Rochester until the family the company to Union Camp. The company was then sold to International Paper/xpedx, and in July 2015 it merged with Veritiv. The Alling and Cory building was on Verona Street in Rochester, which stood for over 175 years old before it was sold, and eventually torn down.

Acquisition information:
The Alling and Cory Company Papers were the gift of Debra McDivitt, 2016.

Access

RESTRICTIONS:

The Alling and Cory Company Papers is open for research use. Researchers are advised to contact the Rare Books, Special Collections, and Preservation Department prior to visiting. Upon arrival, researchers will also be asked to fill out a registration form and provide photo identification.

TERMS OF ACCESS:

In consultation with a curator, reproductions may be made upon request. Permission to publish materials from the collection must be requested from a curator. Researchers are responsible for determining any copyright questions.
