Background

Scope and Content:

This collection includes Adviser's Handbooks from the 1971/1972 academic year to the present. Handbooks are organized alphabetically and cover topics such as academic honesty, grades, majors, and studying abroad. The last few pages of some handbooks provide advisers with examples of paperwork such as "add/drop" forms, requests for an incomplete grade, and approval forms for concentrations and minors. The collection also includes some copies of handbooks that have been annotated. In addition to the handbooks themselves, some folders contain correspondence, notes, and information about University programs. Starting in the 2015/2016 academic year, handbooks were produced in electronic form only; printed copies have been included in the collection.

The collection does not include handbooks for the academic years 1972/1973, 1974/1975, 1977/1978, 1981/1982, 1991/1992, and 2001/2002.

Biographical / Historical:

The University's Official Bulletin for the College of Arts and Science began to describe a Student Advisory Program in the 1940/1941 academic year. In a chapter on Admission, it was explained that certain faculty members served as freshman advisers or "class officers" within the College for Men or the College for Women:

The college offers complete advisory service to all of its students. To the Freshman Class are assigned permanent freshman class officers. . . . These class officers are easily accessible to students and in the course of any one year have several conferences with each student regarding the progress of his work, his choice of courses for the ensuing year, and provide an opportunity for the student to seek mature help in connection with individual problems that may arise concerning any phase of his college experience. (page 25)

Academic advising later came to be administered by the Office of Counseling and Special Services in Morey Hall. In the 1970s, the Academic Advising Office moved to Lattimore Hall, and in the 1990s it became part of the College Center for Academic Support. Since 2012/2013, the center has been called the College Center for Advising Services (CCAS).

Administrators of academic advising since the 1970s have been Miriam Rock, Suzanne Jagel O'Brien (Class of 1959), and Marcy Kraus. In fall 2016, the directorship of CCAS became an endowed position named for O'Brien.
