Abstract:
This collection mainly holds 35mm black and white photograph negatives of SUNY Oswego news and events occurring between 1996 and 2004 taken by James Russell in his role as Photographer for the Office of Communications and Marketing. These negatives are sometimes accompanied by contact sheets and documents that provide more information on the photographed events.

Background

Scope and Content:

This collection documents significant events that took place on the SUNY Oswego Campus and in the City of Oswego between 1996 and 2004. It is made up of six boxes containing largely photographic materials with some textual materials that provide additional context about events. These materials include photographs, photographic negatives, contact sheets, and paper documents describing the photographed events.

Biographical / Historical:

Jim Russell has served as staff photographer at SUNY Oswego since 1989. Russell began as a freelance photographer with the college in 1983, the year he received his Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from SUNY Oswego. He won numerous awards for his community newspaper and SUNY Oswego photographic work. Jim works for the college's Office of Communications and Marketing, and also produces photos for the Office of Development and Alumni Engagement.

Acquisition information:
Received from Jim Russell, Office of Communications and Marketing on October 7, 2019. The collection came in 9 three-ring binders.
Processing information:

Original Post-It notes were photocopied, placed in original order, and removed from collection. The original order of the collection was maintained during processing. The only exceptions was the year of 2003, which was arranged in chronological order to best fit the rest of the collection.

Arrangement:

Collection came in chronological order. Folders are mainly separated by month. Minor rearrangment for cerain folders and items.

Further accruals are expected.

Researchers might need a negative viewer to examine some of the items in the collection.
