Abstract:
Isaac B. Poucher, Sheldon's longtime lieutenant, carried on the founder's revolutionary direction as the second principal at Oswego Normal School from 1897 to 1913. He was associated with Oswego Normal School for 50 years. Poucher’s vision led to the construction of what is now Sheldon Hall and buying the land that brought us to the college’s current lakeside location. Graduates continued to carry the Oswego Method into the world and expanded the institution’s reputation and legacy.

Biographical / Historical:

Isaac Buchanan Poucher was born in Manor, New York, on July 21, 1827. The Pouchers then lived in Sterling, New York. He attended Mexico Academy and Red Creek Academy. He graduated from Albany State Normal School in 1847. In 1852 he studied medicine in New York City for 1 year. In 1902 he received a degree of doctor of pedagogy from Syracuse University. In 1848 he moved to Oswego, New York, and joined the Oswego Normal School faculty in 1861as a member of the Mathematics Department. He was principal of ONS from 1897 until 1913. Dr. Poucher was collector of customs for the District of Oswego from 1885 - 1889. This position also included the duties of Superintendent of Lighthouses for the Ninth District and Custodian of Public Buildings.

He was a member of the Fortnightly Club and the Oswego Lodge. Dr. Poucher was also a member and elder of the First Presbyterian Church.

He married Katherine L. Allen on June 29, 1858. They had three children, 2 daughters, Katherine and Lucy, and 1 son, Allen. On February 4,1890 Dr. Poucher married Matilda S. Cooper. He resided at 148 West 5th Street, Oswego, NY.

Dr. Poucher's brother, W. A. Poucher, was a prominent lawyer and New York state politician His brother Jacob S. Poucher, owned a livery in Oswego. Another brother, Dr. Marshall M. Poucher was a veterinary surgeon and Thaddeus Poucher was an Oswego businessman.
