The collection contains approximately 200 photocopies of letters and 26 photocopies of photographs with descriptions on the reverse of correspondence between Richard Lord Hill and his fiancee/wife Julia Havens.
- Biographical / Historical:
Richard Lord Hill was born in 1844 in on a farm in Wayne, Yates County, New York. After teaching in Fulton, Oswego and Baldwinsville, New York, and editing a newspaper, he volunteered in the military. He was a member of the 24th New York Volunteer Infantry Regiment. He was a lieutenant in Company E.
He was married to Julia Havens [the only correspondent in this collection of letters] in 1863. Lt. Hill was discharged in October 1864 after being wounded in Cold Harbor, Virginia. Richard Lord Hill died on April 25, 1902.
