Biographical / Historical:

First-year undergraduate Parsons School of Design students created the graphic novels in this collection as one of their projects (or "deliverables") for the course, Laboratory 2, in two sections co-taught by Julia Gorton and Madeline Schwartzman. Laboratory 2 was a continuation of Laboratory 1, which students took in their first semester at Parsons. One of the stated goals of Laboratory 2 was to immerse students in "contemporary art and design practices and culture," with a focus on user-centered design, according to the syllabus. Parsons offered approximately 24 sections of this course (PUFN 1510) during the Spring 2007 semester, all co-taught.

Laboratory classes were situated under the Department of Core Studies, Foundation Program, and taught by faculty working across multiple art and design disciplines. Parsons School of Design first implemented the Foundation Program, or Foundation Year, in 1972, shortly after affiliating with The New School and being granted the ability to award bachelor's degrees. The Foundation Year curriculum ended with the Spring 2013 semester. It was replaced with the first-year required course, Integrated Seminar and Studio.

Custodial history:

These items were formerly part of Special Collections in the Adam and Sophie Gimbel Art and Design Library of Parsons School of Design and cataloged as a discrete collection. According to Julia Gorton, a librarian purchased the graphic novels from the student creators during a "pop-up shop" and later exhibited them in Gimbel Library in Fall 2007.
