There is a large amount of recent material about Sojourner Truth, including bibliographies, newspaper clippings and material about events celebrating her (art, plays, music, memorials, a commemorative stamp) and gatherings in her honor in the New Paltz area (mainly 1960s-1980s).

Biographical / Historical:

The current library on the campus of SUNY New Paltz was named for Sojourner Truth at its dedication on March 13, 1971.

Sojourner Truth was born into slavery in Dutch-speaking Ulster County, New York in 1797. Originally named Isabella Baumfree she had five children. She became an itinerant preacher and devoted abolitionist renaming herself Sojourner Truth. She traveled the countryside, also lecturing on temperance, civil rights and women’s rights.
